Fire Island's central communities of Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, Water Island and Sailors Haven/Sunken Forest, a Fire Island National Seashore Park, are served by the Sayville Ferry, which is located on River Road in the South Shore hamlet of Sayville.
Eating is allowed only in the commercial business district. There is no eating permitted on the beach, overpasses leading to the beach, or in the residential area. Please help keep our beaches and streets clean!
You can walk to the areas of fire island where you can't drive. If you park at Field 5, the one closest to the lighthouse, you can actually walk past the lighthouse to Kismet, Soltaire and other Fire Island beaches/villages.
Jones Beach Bike Path is a 8.7 mile lightly trafficked point-to-point trail located near Seaford, New York that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, running, bird watching, and road biking.
The Fire Island dress code is casual and comfortable. All Fire Island restaurants will welcome you in shorts, but a shirt and shoes are always required. Don't make the mistake of over-dressing for a night out. If you're female, avoid high heels, as you'll be doing a lot of walking.
The use or possession of alcoholic beverages on federal park lands within Fire Island National Seashore is allowed for anyone age 21 or older, except in historic structures and visitor centers.
The ferry is CASH ONLY, and a one-way ticket costs $9 (you also have the option of buying a round-trip ticket for $17. Lastly, note that if you are bringing a large amount of luggage (read: coolers full of beer), you will likely be charged for doing so.
Presently, Fire Island Ferries only accepts groceries from Shop Rite, King Kullen and Pat's Market. They have accounts set up with us, and will cover the freight charge. Therefore, we can leave your cartons of groceries on the town dock that you have designated when placing your grocery order.

There is no fee to enter Fire Island National Seashore but plan to pay parking and/or transportation fees to get to most parts of Fire Island.
There are a variety of options for an overnight stay on Fire Island. At National Park Service sites, options include camping and marinas. The family tent campground at Watch Hill, and the marinas at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven are open from mid-May to mid-October.

Loaner bikes are included in many Fire Island rentals but the absence of paved roads between many of the communities can make it tricky to get very far on two wheels. Golf cart rentals are available in larger communities.
The Island is about a 50-60 mile drive from Manhattan depending on which ferry you need to take. The trip can take about 1.5 to 3 hours from Manhattan. Traffic can be heavy in summer, so allow more time to catch the ferry. The train to Fire Island takes about 1.5 hours and runs frequently.
Fire Island seems to have it all: gorgeous beaches, quaint communities, outdoor dining and waterfront hotels, boating, camping and hiking, even an historic lighthouse. It's the perfect vacation destination for families, whether it's for a quick day trip, a weekend getaway, or an extended stay.
The park is accessible by car via the Robert Moses Causeway. There are several parking lots in the state park (a fee is charged) and parking is available within Field 5 to reach the Fire Island Lighthouse and Lighthouse Beach.
Fire Island Beach appeared on charts in the 1850s, and folklore suggests the name arose from land-based pirates, or “wreckers,†who built beach fires at night to lure cargo ships onto shore. Some say poison ivy gave Fire Island its name, either for its red leaves in autumn or its fiery itch.
No trip to Fire Island, New York's homo-away-from-home, is completely free. First up, here's the rule for going to Fire Island without a place to stay: if you're comfortable sleeping on the beach as a last resort, then everything will be OK, but you shouldn't have to.
Uber users can now buy Fire Island Ferry tickets in the Uber app. Fire Island Ferries, Uber and Masabi have partnered to allow ferry riders to purchase tickets ahead of time directly in the Uber app.
