It just told the story it wanted to tell, then stopped. I assume that Capps and Murphy wanted to get on with their next project, Atlantis. Unfortunately for them that didn't find the same acclaim or viewing figures as Merlin and it sputtered out after a couple of series.

Merlin and Arthur are now secretly married and they love each other. However Arthur is to be king some day and Merlin has a huge destiny on his shoulders which could stand in the way.

I've always wonder about the age of the characters in Merlin,As they never really told us in the show, I have try to imagine it myself. so yes, Arthur must have been twenty years old!
Morgana is the youngest, then Arthur, then finally, Morgause. In the first episode, Morgana was 16 years old and Arthur was 21. It is unknown how old Morgause was, but Gaius said she was smuggled out of Camelot when she was a baby, so her and Arthur must be approximately the same age, Morgause probably slightly older.
