Thomas is no longer as safe as it once was. Crime against tourists has been on the rise, and muggings are frequent. Wandering the island at night, especially on the back streets of Charlotte Amalie (particularly on Back St.), is not recommended. For a town of this small size, there is an unusually high crime rate.

Mosquitoes are always around in the U.S. Virgin Islands but their numbers increase after extended rainfall. Adult females lay their eggs in water. If you are visiting during a rainier month or after a rainy spell, use some insect repellent and you should be OK.
In our opinion the only place to stay is on the East End near Red Hook. Best beaches, great shops and restaurants in Red Hook and convenient to the ferry to St. John and BVI's. If you want a condo, we recommend Cowpet Bay.
Some of the nonnative land mammals roaming the islands are the white-tailed deer, small Asian mongoose, goats, feral donkeys, rats, mice, sheep, hogs, dogs and cats. Sea mammals includes numerous species of whales, dolphins, orcas, manatees and dugongs.
The reptiles found on St. Croix have been red tail boas, except two rat snakes discovered in shipping containers in 2004 and 2006. The red tail snakes are not venomous, Coles said, but they have a nasty bite that can lead to infection.
Sharks and other possibly dangerous fish roam the waters here. Barracudas are large fish, but generally harmless so don't panic if you see one nearby. The most common shark in the area is the Nurse shark.
Found in the Izu islands of Japan, Miyake-jima's most prominent feature is the active volcano, Mount Oyama, which has erupted several times in recent history. Since the most recent explosion, in 2005, the volcano has constantly leaked poisonous gas, requiring residents to carry a gas mask at all times.

In February and March they pass right by Coral World on St Thomas on their way back to the colder waters up north where they hunt for krill, plankton and small fish to eat. Whales are very acrobatic and often breach high out of the water slapping it as they come back down.
