Small breeds tend to mature faster than large breeds. On average, however, males become fertile after six months of age and reach full sexual maturity by 12 to 15 months. Healthy stud dogs may remain sexually active and fertile to old age. Adult males are able to mate at any time.

Allowing the male and female to have more than one mating session over a few days will ensure more chance of a successful mating. A sign of a successful mating is when the male and female readily accept each other and become “tied together".

Does spay/neuter surgery present more risks to older dogs? All surgical procedures involve risk. In the hands of a competent veterinarian, however, most senior dogs (generally, dogs are considered senior at approximately seven years of age) can be safely spayed or neutered.
The only permanent solution to preventing a pooch from going into heat is to have her spayed. Ideally, you should spay your dog prior to her first heat cycle, by six months of age.
When your pet is spayed, the entire reproductive tract (including both ovaries and the uterus) is surgically removed. Therefore, your spayed dog no longer has ovaries, produces estrogen, or goes into heat.
Although six months old is the average age of a dog's first heat, this can vary widely. Some dogs can go into heat as young as four months, while larger breeds may be as old as two years before their first heat. Responsible breeders never breed a dog on her first or even her second heat.

Female cycle. The average length of the reproductive cycle for females is 2–4 weeks. Females reach sexual maturity (puberty) between 8 and 18 months of age. There is a tremendous variability in the maturation age between breeds, and even within a breed of dog.
In addition to the medical benefits listed above, there can be a significant improvement in your dog's behavior after you spay her. Once a female is spayed, behavior tends to be more level and consistent. An unspayed female dog's hormones may also cause her to display guarding behavior.
If the puppy is sideways or bottom first, they become stuck. Developmental defects that result in enlargement of certain body parts can make birth difficult. Death of the puppy in utero can result in abnormal positioning and can affect uterine contractions.
There's a relatively small window when your dog is most fertile during the heat cycle; it may begin about nine or ten days after she goes into heat and lasts about five days. However, she can become pregnant until the end of the cycle.
Many pregnant dogs start to pant heavily, and her temperature will drop from a normal temperature (100-to-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) to 99 degrees or even lower shortly before going into labor. Approximately 24 hours after this temperature drop, she will whelp, and you will be the proud owner of a new litter of puppies.
Usually, the size of a dog litter is mainly based on the dog's body size — simply because biologically, bigger bodies are able to carry a larger litter size than smaller bodies. The litter size also depends on the breed of the female. Some small dog breeds will only bear one puppy at a time; we call these singletons.

Pregnant dogs can be aborted using a product called ALIZIN. Whilst it is registered for use in dogs as far pregnant as 45 days post mating, it is recommended to use this product prior to day 35 post mating.
Enlarged nipples or teats are extremely common in mother dogs. Look for nipples that are bigger than those found on a dog who hasn't had puppies. And if the dog recently gave birth, she might even still be lactating or leaking milk. Loose-ish belly skin is another trait shared by many dogs who had puppies.
