Temporary Fixes for a Chipped or Broken Tooth
If your whole tooth falls out, with the root intact, place it in a small container with milk. Your dentist will hopefully be able to place this tooth back into your mouth. If the remaining tooth has a sharp edge, you can try covering it with chewing gum, gauze, or wax. When we say superglue, we refer to any of the cyanoacrylate-based adhesives with brand names like Super Glue or Krazy Glue. You may even catch a few people on the Internet proclaiming that it worked for them. We even believe them. We don't doubt that superglue can hold a bond on teeth.
Tooth extraction is performed by a dentist or oral surgeon and is a relatively quick outpatient procedure with either local, general, intravenous anesthesia, or a combination. Removing visible teeth is a simple extraction. Teeth that are broken, below the surface, or impacted require a more involved procedure.
This will secure the crown to the tooth temporarily. Try to avoid biting or chewing in the area of the crown and brush gently. NEVER use permanent household glues (such as Crazy Glue or Gorilla Glue) on a crown.
How much does it cost to fix a chipped or broken tooth? It can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars for a cosmetic procedure to $2,500–$3,000 for a root canal and crown, depending on where you live. If you end up having a tooth extracted and replaced with an implant, the cost may range from $3,000–$5,000.
Broken Tooth:
- Rinse your mouth out with warm water or saltwater.
- Apply a cold compress to the cheek near the broken tooth.
- Apply gauze to the broken tooth to help soak up the bleeding.
- If you experienced a severe break, you need to see a dentist within 24 hours.
Once segmented, your dentist will likely need to “rock” the root back and forth to ease in its removal. This is done either with a pair of forceps, or a dental tool known as an “elevator,” which is akin to a common lever, and somewhat resembles a small flat-head screwdriver.
Super Glue. Toxicity: Minimally toxic in small amounts. If someone gets a taste of superglue in their mouth, swish and spit water quickly and have something to drink to remove the taste.
Just know that the highest quality dental cement can be found at your dentist's office. If you are intent on doing it yourself though, please at least use a product certified for oral care.
Toxicity: Minimally toxic in small amounts. Expected Symptoms: Super glue does not usually cause many symptoms. The liquid becomes a solid very quickly, even inside the mouth. Getting the glue on the skin can quickly result in skin-to-skin or skin-to-object adherence (they become stuck together).
Permanent Dental Glue/Glue
Zinc phosphate is credited to be one of the oldest and dependable glues that have been used for permanent crowns. The later ones are glass ionomer (GI), and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) which are known to be made from polyacrylic acid liquid and fluoroaluminosilicate glass powder. In addition, they're cemented in place with a weakened temporary cement that's purposely designed not to last long. The temporary crown needs to be removed in 1 to 3 weeks, and thus the weak temporary cements may occasionally fail before your scheduled follow-up visit.
