The S-Bahn operates daily from approximately 4:15 am to 1 am, with trains running every 10 minutes in rush hour and every 20 minutes during the rest of the day. Vienna works on an honesty system with no ticket barriers at stations and no formal, permanent ticket checks on the metro, local trains, trams and buses. You just hop on and off unchallenged. This doesn't mean public transport is free, though. You do need to buy a ticket.
