During the day, possums sleep in dens—in thickets of gorse, flax and scrub, among the roots of trees, in dead trunks and logs, in the burrows of other animals (such as kiwi) and even in the ceilings of buildings.

How long do possums live for?
Virginia opossum: 4 years
Common opossum: 2 years
The common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, was first introduced to New Zealand from Australia in 1837 to establish a fur trade. This release was unsuccessful and a second release 20 years later at the same Southland location was required for them to establish.
Possums are omnivores, and, as well as a wide range of leaves, they eat birds' eggs, chicks and insects. Their voracious appetite threatens the survival of many of our native plants, birds and insects. Apart from their destruction of our native plants and animals, possums are also a major pest on farmland.
There are few known fatal diseases of brushtail possums in New Zealand. They can carry leptospirosis (Hathaway et al. 1978) and bovine tuberculosis (eckdahl et al. 1970; Livingstone 1991), and the protozoa cryptosporidium and coccidian, which can lead to severe diarrhoea.
Adult possums are preyed upon by large owls, fox, coyotes, wolves, and bobcats. More commonly than that, the young are preyed upon by a great many animals.
The best way to put the opossum down in a humane way is to shoot it in the head with a fire weapon, like a gun or a shotgun. An advantage of this method is that it will kill the animal instantly. However, if your haven't handled a weapon before, it might be dangerous for your to use it for the first time.
The primary sources of sustenance are small rodents, insects, worms, slugs and snails, frogs and birds. Additionally, opossums eat vegetables, berries, nuts, fruit, garbage, pet food and bird seed.
Use Ammonia as a DeterrentAmmonia is the efficient way of removing them from the house and gardens because it smells horrible. As we know opossums are night time animals because they do not like lights, and also the smell of ammonia make them obnoxious. One should strategically place ammonia scent in the house.

Opossums seldom stay in one area for more than a few nights, so fear of them "taking over" an area should not be a concern. Occasionally a mother with babies might stay longer, but will leave after a brief period as well.
Although they aren't particularly finicky eaters, the best possum bait is fish or apples. Baiting opossum traps with canned pet food also works well. While there are differences of opinion as to the best bait for opossums, all professional trappers agree, the smellier the better.
Onions and garlic possible natural deterrents"Possums are very much like people; they are individuals and will react to different things," he said. "What is found to probably be the most effective is a pungent smell."
Ring-tail possum poo is about 1cm long and a dark brown to black colour, and can be best described as an uneven pellet that looks a lot like an olive pit.
If you've found young abandoned opossum, you may be wondering, “Can opossums be pets?” Opossums are typically non-aggressive and can even be docile. Opossums are omnivores and eat just about anything out in the wild. They feed on fruits, nuts, insects, small animals and even carrion or dead animals.
>> Virginia opossums are nocturnal (most active at night). They sleep during the day in a den in a hollow tree or in an abandoned rodent burrow.
Though they aren't picky about where they hang out, opossums love trees and will stay aloft in trees as much as possible. They also prefer areas that are wet, like marshes, swamps and streams.
They are attracted to overflowing or odorous trash cans, uncovered compost heaps or other containers that you may have outside. They like to set up their habitat near water or moist areas.
Opossums carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis, and Chagas disease. They may also be infested with fleas, ticks, mites, and lice.
Black, brown, and albino opossums have been found, but are very uncommon.
Possums are a nocturnal animal that could visit your property after dark. A possum will rarely attack and kill a rabbit, despite having sharp teeth. They will eat other animals if those animals are already dead. Just because possums will not necessarily kill and eat your rabbit, it doesn't make them safe.
Aside from a couple of tiny bat species, New Zealand has no native land mammals. And with no predators to eat them, many of the native birds -- including their beloved kiwi -- never learned to fly. The Maori hunted the biggest birds to extinction and the vermin that arrived on European ships did a number on the rest.
Research shows that the biggest threats to kiwi are warm blooded predators that have been introduced to New Zealand—mammals such as stoats, ferrets, dogs, cats and pigs. hese new predators hunt by smell, and kiwi have an unhelpfully strong odour because they evolved to avoid predators who hunted by sight.
Stoats are public enemy number one for kiwi chicks and are the main reason why 95% of kiwi hatched in the wild die before they reach breeding age.
1080 is highly toxic to mammals. New Zealand is a unique country, in which we don't have any native mammals (except bats), but a very large number of introduced, highly destructive mammal pests. Other countries have native mammal species, and therefore have a higher risk of non-target by-kill if they use 1080.
When they consume kawakawa fruit they
eat seeds too but then
possums are unable to digest these seeds.

Possums are unlikely to fight with cats, but as they carry Bovine tuberculosis it would be wise to get rid of it. We have a 4-month-old kitten that has just finished her vaccination course and will be fine to be outside. Possums are a serious pest in New Zealand as they eat our native plants, bird eggs and chicks.
Kill rates for possums using 1080 generally range between 75 and 100 per cent of the population, although they are now usually above 90 per cent. Kill rates for rats using 1080 are often close to 100 per cent.
New Zealand has no harmful animals like venomous snakes, scorpions or venomous insects, so its sole venomous native spider – the rare katipō – has almost mythical status. Since the late 19th century there have been accidental introductions of the venomous redback and white-tailed spiders from Australia.
There are no snakes, bears or wolves in New Zealand. Unfortunately, there are still spiders.
