- There are posted signs near your swimming area.
- You're near a spot where two rivers merge.
- The water is near a pasture or farmland.
First of all, after a day's walking, cycling, swimming, sailing, golfing or playing tennis, it's wonderful to be virtually stationary. (In summer, half an hour is not an unusual wait.) Secondly, all of Aldeburgh society meets here.
A good spot to start swimming in this historic vale is at Fen Bridge near Dedham, a quiet spot with fairly deep water. In Flatford you can float past the iconic Flatford Mill and Willy Lott's Cottage, which featured in Constable's most famous paintings, such as The Haywain, painted in 1821.

Houghton Mill is on the Great River Ouse in Cambridgeshire. The water here is deep and clean enough for swimming in. There are shallower millstreams for paddling and families with children. Parking is available nearby and there is also a nearby café for refreshments and toilets.
Wide, deep section used by pleasure crafts and slightly brown, but water is some of the cleanest of any Essex river. 2m deep.
You swim at your own risk and take note of the depth markers or stay and play by the sandy beach. Families were enjoying it when I dipped there, including some from Maldon whose pool has been closed.
Epping Forest is a private beach found on the Severn River near Clements Creek. The beach is equipped with docks, swimming lanes, a diving board, and a pier. At the end of the pier, the water is about 10-12 feet deep. A lifeguard is on duty throughout the summer from 11AM until 5PM.

The river above Paper Mill Lock 4 is heavily used by canal boats and does not look suitable for swimming, but downstream there are many opportunities to enjoy water that is clean and quite deep with only the gentlest of flow, although access may be a bit muddy.
Swimming in Hanningfield Reservoir can be dangerous and is not permitted, except under supervision at events such as the triathlon.
However, as Andrew tells Sun Online Once, even once the sewer is completed, the Thames will still look brown. This is because it is a muddy river, owing to the silt on the riverbed - but any new water that enters the system will be clean "almost overnight".
In England and Wales less than 4% of the 41,000 miles (68,000km) of rivers have public access. But the vast majority of rivers are inaccessible to the public. The person who owns the riverbank - the riparian owner - also owns the river bed.

Shower before you get in the waterIT IS A MUST. Again, the pool is undeniably only as clean as you are. Showering before stepping into the lake is also important. You should also shower after swimming to wash off any contaminants you may have come in contact with.
Quarries are extremely dangerous places to swim. Steep drop-offs, deep water, sharp rocks, flooded equipment, submerged wire, and industrial waste make swimming risky. Another risk factor is the very cold water. Jumping or falling into cold water can be fatal - even for a young healthy person.
The Thames has a reputation as a dirty river. It's not totally undeserved. The river may therefore have been contaminated with sewage from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), that can spill into the river during periods of heavy rain.
Dirty water containing chemicals is put back in the river. Water used for cooling is warmer than the river itself, and this is also a form of pollution. People are sometimes careless and throw rubbish such as bottles and crisp packets directly into rivers. Polluted water also carries diseases.
ONSLOW COUNTY ----- Thanks to decades of cleanup efforts by city officials, scientists, and volunteers, the New River is safe for swimming and fishing again. In the late 1990s, a hog waste spill polluted the water and experts anticipated a serious negative impact on its marine life.
Our rivers and lakes are cleaner today than in the 1950s and 1960s when industrial and agricultural pollution almost succeeded in killing our rivers. Over 70 per cent of the rivers of England and Wales are very good (target 1 or A) or good (target 2 or B) on a five-tier water quality scale.
Water in a stream, river or lake may look clean, but it can still be filled with bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can result in waterborne diseases, such as cryptosporidiosis or giardiasis. It is essential that you purify natural water.
