BBC Alba is to move to a more prominent position on Sky's electronic programme guide (EPG). The channel has said the move, to a slot alongside BBC One HD and BBC Two HD, will create "better awareness" of the programmes it broadcasts. BBC Alba was launched five years ago and in 2011 it became available on Freeview.
Gaelic television service BBC Alba will start to broadcast on Freeview for the first time from 1700 BST. The channel will appear on Freeview channel 8 after being available for more than two years on satellite television and the internet.
BBC ALBA continuity presentation and channel management is based in Stornoway, while the news services are based in Inverness. BBC Scotland's headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow is used to transmit the programmes.
BBC Scotland will be available in High Definition (HD) via Freeview/YouView, Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media. The channel will also be available in HD via BBC iPlayer.
Scottish Gaelic is distinct from Scots, the Middle English-derived language varieties which had come to be spoken in most of the Lowlands of Scotland by the early modern era. Today, Scottish Gaelic is recognised as a separate language from Irish, so the word Erse in reference to Scottish Gaelic is no longer used.

The beadier eyed amongst you will have noticed that a new channel joined the new version of BBC iPlayer family this week. That channel is called S4C or Sianel Pedwar Cymru, the Welsh Language Fourth Channel and its addition represents a big moment for audiences and iPlayer alike.
However Sky has described the BBC's arguments as "disingenuous" because the corporation denies Sky customers access to BBC on-demand content "in ways which are convenient to viewers". And on the SkyGo and Sky Q mobile app, the BBC has refused to grant Sky the rights to show any content whatsoever.
