If you are still under AppleCare, AppleCare+, or the 1 year manufacturer's warranty and you have a broken screen AND another issue that is covered under warranty, Apple will actually replace your device for free — IF the other issue is not in any way connected to the screen break.

I agree with the fact that Asurion gives you a replacement phone but the deductible are so high. Apple care is a higher upfront cost but way lower cost per repair. Screen repairs with apple care are only $30 but you do only get 2 incidents.

This plan allows for two incidents of accidental damage, theft, or loss coverage. Some cell carriers and third-party insurance companies offer plans that do cover loss or theft, but AppleCare+ only covers defects and accidental damage.
AppleCare+ does not cover your iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple Watch for loss or theft, wear and tear, or for cosmetic damage which does not affect the functioning of the device (see clause 5.1). AppleCare+ does not cover you for failures due to defects in design, materials or workmanship.
Unless there's some visible damage or malfunction there's no way to tell and probably even if you took it to Apple they couldn't tell any more than you can. The most delicate part is probably the glass back and front. Check those for damage and then decide if it makes a difference to you and consider replacement cost.
You can tell if your iPhone has water damage by removing the SIM tray and looking for a red color inside the SIM card slot. If it's red, that means the Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) has been activated and there is water damage. It should appear white or silver if there is no damage.
