Swimming is an equivalency sport, which means all scholarships are not full scholarships, and coaches may divide the total number of scholarships allotted to them between as many athletes as they wish.

Overall, Yale men's swim team has won four NCAA championships, thirty Eastern Intercollegiate Swim League (EISL) championships, and several Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) championships, and is recognized as one of the most winning teams in intercollegiate athletics.

Any student who cannot pass the swim test is required to register for PE 1100 - Beginning Swimming as his or her physical education course before electives can be chosen. Any student that does not complete their swim test during their freshman year will have to pay a $100 test fee.

Children as young as 5 or 6 can join swim teams, and organizations such as the YMCA offer the opportunity to meet with an instructor to assess a child's ability and place them into the right age group and skill level.
In a brief nutshell, most swim team tryouts run much like a swim practice and only last for a short period. The coach will test each swimmer's ability in the water and will either have the swimmer swim each stroke or have them complete a series of small sets. This depends upon each swim team and coach.
In short, if you can swim legally and have the motivation to practice 4-5 days a week then you can join the high school swim team with no experience.
