Fitbit trackers boasting the company's PurePulse heart rate monitoring technology are "dangerous" and pose a risk to general consumers. That's according to Dr. Edward Jo, assistant professor of Applied Physiology at California State Polytechnic University. "It can definitely put them at risk."
The Fitbit Charge HR was accurate 84 percent of the time, and the Basis Peak was accurate 83 percent of the time. The researchers found that the harder someone exercised, the less accurate the trackers were. Fitness trackers usually measure heart rate using sensors that detect the pulse through the skin on your wrist.
Your heart rate changes from minute to minute. It depends on whether you are standing up or lying down, moving around or sitting still, stressed or relaxed. Your resting heart rate, though, tends to be stable from day to day. The usual range for resting heart rate is anywhere between 60 and 90 beats per minute.
For adults 18 and older, a normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), depending on the person's physical condition and age. For children ages 6 to 15, the normal resting heart rate is between 70 and 100 bpm, according to the AHA.
If your Fitbit's heart rate monitor shows 0, it's likely that the heart rate monitoring feature is off. Open your device's settings app and change your heart rate setting to either Auto or On. If it already shows Auto or On, tap it off, wait 30 seconds, and tap it back on. That usually solves this problem!
The Fitbit Inspire doesn't have a heart rate sensor, which is a huge omission at that price. Unlike some other devices at this price point, the Fitbit duo lack in-built GPS, which makes them a lot less useful for those who don't want to carry their phones with them while exercising.
