What size skateboard should you get? We recommend starting with a skateboard deck width that is proportional to your shoe size. If you wear men's size 6.5 to 9, start out with a deck width of 7.5 to 8.0 inches. If you wear shoes 9.5 or larger, we recommend getting a deck between 8.0 and 8.5 inches.
Girl brand boards are fine, as good as any other - what you want to avoid is a "cheap" pre-built board, and by that I mean something like you'd find in the toy store or Wal-Mart.

A skate deck from a top brand is a quality skate deck no matter which brand. So between Zero and Plan B, you'll be looking at the same quality when it comes to durability and pop. It doesn't matter what brand is under your feet, if you like the feel of the board then that's the one that suits you best.
Many skaters are happy with the quality and durability of their Enjoi skateboard. Many recommend Enjoi decks for being very versatile as their concave makes for comfortable riding and good flips for all types of street skating. The Resin 7 construction makes the boards feel really solid.
Pre-assembled skateboards are cheaper and fine for beginners. You won't feel any difference between expensive and cheaper components. I have had mine for about 4 months. Depends on how you skate. Mine don't last long because I like buying new ones. If it hasn't broken in 4 months then it should still be good, but if it feels worn out then I'd say get a new board.

Zumiez is not actually that bad and should not be compared to walmart ever. The product might be more expensive but they definitely have decent stuff. Supporting local skate shops is good and prolly better than giving it to zumiez but still don't let them stop you. Zumiez is a fine place for a first skateboard.

Santa Cruz complete skateboards are pretty decent. Santa Cruz decks are great, provide enough pop, and consist of quality maple wood. I still ride Santa Cruz occasionally and I can't really find anything that's wrong with their boards.

How to build a skateboard:
- Apply the grip tape to the deck.
- Pop the holes through the grip tape for the truck bolts.
- Insert the 8 truck bolts through the holes in the grip tape and deck.
- Attach your trucks and tighten up the nuts on the truck bolts.

- Fit the wheels to the truck axles.
