From 1 December 2015 you'll earn Qantas Points and Status Credits based on where you fly, as well as your choice of airline and the fare purchased, on eligible fares and flights with Qatar Airways.Qatar Airways business class upgrades using frequent flyer points (Qmiles) Although you can't upgrade your Qatar Airways flight using Qantas Frequent Flyer points, you can upgrade using miles from Qatar's own Privilege Club loyalty scheme.

Qmiles are airmiles earnt on flights - many uses including award flights, award upgrades, duty free purchases in DOH, etc. Qmiles expire 3 years after earning. Qpoints are tier points that earn you status - you need to have earnt 275 qpoints in order to renew your Gold status by 21 Jan.
Realistically, it's a gamble and getting upgraded to business class at the airport is pretty rare. If luxury and extra legroom is really important to you, book it in advance. However, if you're perfectly willing to fly economy class, and willing to roll the dice, a last-minute upgrade can be the cheapest option.
Another highlight of Qatar Airways service is the unlimited drinks available throughout the flight, including premium spirits, a rarity in economy class these days! You can also avail of WiFi on-board.
Fare Types
To redeem Southwest Rapid Rewards points for a Wanna Get Away ticket, you will need approximately 70 points per $1 of airfare. When paying cash for a Wanna Get Away ticket, you will earn 6 points per $1 of airfare. Anytime tickets are mid-level price tickets that you can buy at any time.Online upgrade passenger selection is based on, but not limited to, the below criteria:
- Passenger has a confirmed ticket on a Qatar Airways operated flight.
- The booking reference has valid e-mail address.
- The fare paid is eligible for upgrade and booked on/or before 8 days prior to departure.
Free Qatar Airways business class upgrades using Qcredits
As with using points, the number of Qcredits you'll need for an upgrade varies by route, with Australia-Doha flights upgradeable by spending 35 Qcredits, and Doha-London flights by redeeming 25 Qcredits.From my understanding, QR allows airport upgrades to Business class ONLY via miles or QR points, not cash. They do sometimes offer cash upgrades via email offers about a week before the flight though and that's at a low rate. You can always pay the full Business fare to upgrade, but that's expensive.

You can redeem your Qmiles/Qcredits online for an upgrade on Qatar Airways by logging into your account and request an upgrade from your Dashboard.
Qmiles are valid for a period of 3 years and will expire twice a year at the end of the semester in which those Qmiles where earned. Expiry dates will be 30th June and 31st December each year.
Many airlines offer upgrade bidding, but Qatar Airways offers a fixed price with no uncertainty. The airline emails passengers a week before their flight with an offer to upgrade to Business Class if there is space available. Examples shown below include Australia to Doha for US$900 and Doha to London for US$700.
