RELATED: Among Us Recreated in Rocket LeagueEver since Rocket League went free-to-play on September 23rd, players of the game on Nintendo Switch have been completely unable to play the game in its split-screen multiplayer mode.
Edit: From Eurogamer: There's split-screen for two in competitive multiplayer, although it's worth noting both players must be signed into PlayStation Network and at least one player must have PlayStation Plus for it to work. Up to four players can play split-screen in zombies mode.
Aside from the usual online game modes, Rocket League also supports the ad-hoc multiplayer feature of the Nintendo Switch. Ad-hoc is a local connection mode that allows you to play together with your friends without being connected to the same (or any) network.
And now the game is finally available for fans as a free-to-play title on the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. In addition, the game is also available for free on PC via the Epic Games Store.
Rocket League Split Screen | How to play split screen on PC
- To start, Player 1 needs to open up the main menu.
- Players 2-4 should then hit start on their controller.
- All players can now join the party and play online or offline in split screen mode.
But you don't need an internet connection for local wireless play. All you need is two Nintendo Switch consoles (yourself and your friend), the same game cartridge, and the simple task of being next to one another. For this guide, we used Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as an example of how to set up local wireless play.
It appears the current release of Rocket League doesn't have offline or single-player matches available anymore. It has a training mode, but there don't appear to be any AI players, which I think used to be there previously. Rocket League, fully updated, on Steam, Windows 10.
Rocket League is free to play as of today, and can be acquired on the Epic Games Store. Along with the free to play update, a new competitive season has begun, which Psyonix is calling Season One—we're starting over. The new competitive tournaments are also live, and a new Rocket Pass is available.
You will no longer need to use PlayStation Plus or Switch Online to play Rocket League when it goes free-to-play. Psyonix has announced that Rocket League players will no longer need to have a subscription to PlayStation Plus or Switch Online to play the game online.
Xbox owners currently have to purchase Xbox Live Gold, which is $15 a month, in order to play certain games online with friends. In addition to Tournaments, Challenges, and Cross-Progression, there's still a lot coming to Rocket League when free to play launches.
How do I Create or Join a Private Match?
- You will then see two options:
- Create a Private Match. Here you can customize all the settings that you would like for your match, including if you want this to be between you and your Party friends only, or if you want others to be able to join via name and password.
- Join a Private Match.
Rocket League already supported some degree of cross-platform matchmaking, but today, you can have players from every PC and console platform in the same match. You can also join or host private matches with your friends across platforms right away.
To change the split screen mode, follow these instructions:
- Pause the game during play and select Options.
- Highlight the Split Screen Mode option and press the Return (↩) key to switch the mode.
- Highlight Accept and press the Return (↩) key.
Rocket League is absolutely not dying. The player number thrives due to Psonix's move to free-to-play.
According to Steam Charts, Rocket League's previous record for concurrent players on that platform was 119,124 as of March 2020. Psyonix's intention to go free-to-play with Rocket League was announced this July, also revealing that the game had exceeded 75 million players.
To Psyonix: If "Rocket League always has been and always will be a community-driven game", prove it. And the game isn't dying.
In November 2020, Rocket League reached its record high peak concurrent player number at over 128 thousand gamers.

In a press release, the studio stated that "nearly 3 million players logged on each day to play Valorant" during its two-month beta testing period.
One main reason why Rocket League became so popular, is because it was released for free on PS4 for PS Plus users soon after it launched. This enabled it to grab a wide audience, who would become attached to the game, and tell their friends to buy it.
