At the time of sale, the seller is required to provide the buyer with a passing emissions test that has not been used previously to register a vehicle or renew a vehicle registration. Colorado dealers are required to provide a passing emissions test or a voucher good for one emissions test at the time of sale.
In El Paso County, emissions tests are required only for diesel vehicles. However, if you commute to an area in the state that requires emissions tests at least 90 days per year for employment or school you will need an emissions test even though your vehicle is not registered in that area.
For starters, gasoline vehicles 1 – 7 years old are exempt from emissions tests in the state of Colorado.

How far in advance can I have my vehicle tested? An E-Check compliance certificate is good for 365 days, so it is possible to have your vehicle tested up to one year in advance of your registration date. It is often helpful to test early when you know that you will not be in Ohio when it is time to renew.
In January 1996, the State of Ohio began a new vehicle emissions testing program, E-Check, designed to identify motor vehicles that emit excessive levels of pollutants into the air. The program currently tests cars in seven Ohio counties.
Whenever a vehicle's title transfers to another individual within one of the seven E-Check counties and that vehicle's emissions test has expired, that vehicle must be tested. Vehicles that are 25 years old or newer and were titled out-of-state must also be tested before they are registered in Ohio.
Check Counties. Under the new eight-hour ozone standard, the following counties in the Cleveland and Akron area are required to continue the E-Check program: Cuyahoga; Geauga; Lake; Lorain; Medina; Portage; and Summit counties.
Let's take a look at what you can do to pass an E-Check.
- Pay attention to your check engine light.
- Drive your vehicle on the highway prior to your test.
- Get your oil changed.
- Get a tune-up before going for your check.
- Make sure there is air in your tires.
- Check the gas cap.
- If all else fails…
Alberta and Quebec have proposed emissions-testing programs, but the legislation didn't pass. "Testing isn't necessary any more because most cars built in the last 10 years will pass. All light-duty vehicles – cars, trucks, SUVs – in Southern Ontario must pass the test every two years once they're seven years old.
Issuance GuidelinesDealers are NOT permitted to charge more than $20.00 per temporary tag and NOT more than $7.00 per off-highway / APV sticker. Dealers are NOT permitted to issue a second temporary tag to any individual. Each dealer is responsible for inventories consigned to their dealership.
In Ohio, vehicles are not required to pass annual inspections.
