Verizon Wireless announced it has postponed the shutdown of its 3G CDMA network until the end of 2020. Older phones on 3G networks will be impacted by the closure. Users with phones that are reliant on the 3G network will need to upgrade before the end of 2020 to maintain service coverage.
Verizon Wireless customers with older devices still reliant on 3G CDMA technology will be able to continue using them on Verizon's network until the end of 2020. The wireless giant confirmed this week it is postponing its retirement of 3G service for a year.

To bring you faster speeds and new capabilities, we have to evolve our network through a number of changes. One of those changes is phasing out our 3G network by February 2022. Once we do, 3G devices and some 4G wireless devices (those that aren't HD Voice capable) won't work on our network anymore.
Many years were spent with flip phones and I'm actually pleased to see that you can still buy flip phones from LG, Samsung, Kyocera, and others today. Flip phones can last from three days to a week, or more, which is great for travelers.
This is a common misconception, becuase most older devices that are on the CDMA network are "flip phones" and customers are getting notification that their phones will no longer work after July 5th, they believe it is "flip phones" being discontinued. This is not true, you can INDEED upgrade to a 4G cabable flip phone.

No, 5G isn't going to make your 4G LTE phone obsolete. This transition is different from earlier cellular generation shifts, which means 4G could be useful a lot longer. 5G is here, but 4G isn't going away anytime soon. It can run between 10 and 100 times faster than your typical 4G cellular connection today.
It means that your phone will no longer receive any OS upgrades/ updates and Security Patches from your device manufacturer. It will remain in the same level of OS and security patch forever (unless you root it). It is pretty common in Android phones.
Unfortunately, the ability to access the 4G network depends on your phone's capability. So, if you have a 3G phone, you won't have access to the 4G network. On the CDMA network, a 3G phone can access the 3G network, a 4G phone can access the regular 4G network and an LTE phone can access the 4G LTE network.
According to Droid Life, Verizon is no longer activating 3G-only phones. Instead, they will only accept 4G LTE-equipped phones going forward. They also stopped selling 3G devices some time ago, I believe, and even started selling LTE-only flip phones to replace them.

CLEARLY VERIZON WIRELESS AND THEIR PHONE MANUFACTURERS ARE FORCING THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS TOWARD THE "SMART PHONE", THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A MARKET FOR BASIC PHONES AND NOT EVERY CUSTOMER HAS THE DESIRE NOR THE NEED FOR A SMART PHONE!!
