The Chevrolet Corvette C3 was produced from 1967 to 1982 and is the third generation of the Corvette sports car. C3 Corvettes featured a new body and interior, but the chassis and engines were carried forward from the previous generation C2.
It also depends on whether there is the need for body work that could be hiding under the paint. There is some satisfaction in doing the job yourself if you have the time and space. Probably $500 - $20,000 depending upon what you want the car to look like.
For another, the Pace Car edition Corvettes featured a special vehicle identification number (VIN). The 1978 Corvette Pace Car VIN numbers had the number “9” as the eighth digit in the thirteen-digit sequence as opposed to the number “4” associated with all other 1978 models.
A matching numbers Corvette means that its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and the stamp on its engine match, proving that the original engine is still in the car. Numbers matching can also extend to the transmission, alternator, starter, and other components.
As to why there are affordable C3s to be found, in simple terms one reason is that GM built more than half a million of these cars. Many were taken care of since new, while others have some degree of restoration work on them. That means there's still ample supply of good examples.
In my experience they're not terribly expensive to maintain if you're able to do the work yourself (it's not hard to learn). If you can pick it up cheap, go for it! Have someone check it out for you and the get some of the venders catalogs and see what some of the replacement parts cost.
The C3 is fine reliability wise, as are both the C4 and C5. But handling wise, both of those will be better starting platforms. The C3 is known more for big power and muscle-car straight line speed. Any chassis or suspension concerns were simply ironed out with more power.

Maintenance Costs. Although Corvettes are still far more affordable than most European sports cars, it is important to remember that the Corvette is a performance automobile. As such, it has more expensive hardware under the hood. Other maintenance items on Corvettes tend to be more expensive as well.
Despite the many engine innovations over the generation, that 435 hp Big-Block 427 was the most powerful engine the C3 saw.

Automobiles. Every vehicle engine is marked with an engine number by the factory. The engine number includes coded information, which can be decoded to reveal, for example, year of manufacture, country of manufacture, and engine type.
Find it in the lower corner of your windshield on the driver's side. Your VIN number is your vehicle identification number and you can find your engine size by VIN number. In the series of numbers and letters, the tenth from the left denotes the model year and the eighth is the engine codes.
If the VIN or serial number from the engine block does not match the VIN on the vehicle, the engine has been replaced. If you are looking at a used vehicle and the current owner denies it, they may not be lying; the engine may have been swapped before they acquired it.
Look for the VIN stamp located on the front of the engine block. Some VINs on engines are etched on little plaques that are attached to the engine while others are engraved directly on the engine. If you need the VIN number for your records, make sure to jot down the number in a notebook.
based on my personal experience, non numbers matching cars (when it comes to small block cars) usually go for about $5k to $8k less than those with matching numbers.
The engine serial number is on a metal plate attached to the block, typically found on the left-hand side of the engine. The position of the engine plate varies across different engine series. You can find the position of your plate using the table below.
Frame and engine numbers usually dont match out of the factory and haven't done for a very long time. So unless you're buying a classic british bike as long as they match what is on the title you're fine. The engine vin doesnt have to match for registration because the DMV/MVD only cares about the frame vin.
How To Find Engine Number? You can easily find it on the engine of your bike and on the Registration Certificate and Owner's Manual. Just like the Chassis Number, the bike's Engine Number can also be checked online at the government website known as VAHAN, by authorised users only.
An Example:
- If your 4th VIN character is G, then it represents the Month - July.
- If your 5th & 6th characters are 12 it represents the Year - 2012.
- If your 10th VIN character is D, then it represents the Model Year - 2013.
