Goodreads addressed what publishers call the "discoverability' problem" by guiding consumers in the digital age to find books they might want to read.

Common Sense Media uses a scale of one to five, where 3 stars is "Just fine; solid" and anything lower is "Disappointing" at best. There is no agreement on what the lowest rating should be. Some critics make "one star" or a "half-star" their lowest rating.
Ratings of 4 stars or above are considered good to excellent.
In fact, the scores most sought after by consumers are between 4 and 4.5 stars. Combined with a decent sample size of customer reviews, businesses in that rating range can attract customers easier than any place with a 5-star rating. More customers also means more revenue.
No – Goodreads is a completely free book review and recommendation site, so you won't need to pay to access the site or app, unless you're an author who is creating a giveaway.
Goodreads uses a 5 star rating system with the following definitions: 1 star – didn't like it. 2 stars – it was OK. 3 stars – liked it. 4 stars – really liked it.
After much investigation and debate, Goodreads has no plans to implement half stars. This is mainly due to the added layer of complexity that half stars would add to the rating system.
Goodreads is great for looking up books and keeping track of them, and it's perfect for that. The recommendations it gives you and the awards aren't really worth a whole lot of time. You can find good books with the awards but not usually with the main genres.
