Spoiler, yes, the Sony a7R III surely holds its ground in 2020. It is important to remember that a good camera does not get worse over time. I do have a few other beefs with the camera, but besides that little hiccup, the camera really stands its ground.
It's that good. The A7R III takes Sony's highest-resolution sensor from the A7R II and essentially puts it in the body of Sony's professional A9 camera. The A7R3 adds a much bigger battery, a second card slot, a third memory recall position on the top dial and many other important new features to the old A7R II.
Sony is better at most things: autofocus, low light performance, native lens range, 3rd party lens support, dual card slots, exposure compensation dial, video, customisation, and battery life. Nikon is better at some things: grip and handling, menu layout, monitor resolution, and touch screen.
Why you should buy the Sony A7IIIThe Sony A7III gives you 24 MP files vs. 42 MP files on the A7RIII. It will be easier on your storage and your workflow will be much faster. According to Manny's quick tests, the A7III has a slightly better low light performance than the A7RIII.
The A7III has 24MP while the A7RIII has 42MP. The 42MP on the A7RIII can make a huge difference for those who are looking to print larger prints, especially for fine artists who typically aim to have the highest amount of clarity for gallery prints.
Now you can use your beloved Canon lenses on a Sony E-mount APS-C camera with the new Vello Accelerator AF Lens Adapter, available in late May, 2016. With this new adapter, you have fewer excuses to transition to the Sony mirrorless system.
The one downside to shooting in slow-motion (60 or 120 fps) — at least for now — is you can't film in 4K on Sony. You can get up to 1080p, but you'll need to stick to 24 or 30 fps if you want that 4K quality. That said, experiment!
