In Christianity, a name day is a tradition in some countries of Europe and the Americas, and Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox countries in general. It consists of celebrating a day of the year that is associated with one's given name. The celebration is similar to a birthday.

we write 1st birthday cards direct to the child, not to the parents. The child can't read when they're 1 either, but still we write to the child. Often 1st birthday cards are kept and can be read when they are older. It's easier to write something more meaningful if writing direct to the child.

Alternatives that you could use for naming day Godparents for your child could be guardian, mentor, life guardian or supporting adults. But for us, none of these struck a chord, so we stuck with the traditional term and called our chosen friends Godparents, but this will be a completely individual choice.
