If you are caught flying your drone in a no-fly zone you could probably get out with a warning if it was just a minor incident but if it was something serious, you are almost certainly going to receive a fine of some sort. However, if you are a sly negotiator like myself you could probably get out of it.
These guidelines include items like keeping your drone within your line of sight while flying, flying under 400 feet above ground level, and not flying over people, near emergencies, or near other aircraft.
As expected, the big news is that the Mini 2 is a capable of shooting 4K video at 30p/25p/24p, which trumps the Mavic Mini's top 2.7K/30p mode. Beyond the video quality upgrade, the biggest new feature on the Mini 2 is that has Ocusync 2.0 transmission, thanks to its new controller.
“We get it, drones are fun, but it is illegal to fly them in national parks.” And the penalties can be stiff. Violating the ban on unmanned aircraft in national parks “is a misdemeanor with the maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $5,000 fine,” according to the National Park Service.
DJI releases 'GEO zone' firmware update for the Mavic Mini.
There are two ways to use LAANC :
- To receive a near real-time authorization for operations under 400 feet in controlled airspace around airports.
- To submit a "further coordination request" if you need to fly above the designated altitude ceiling in a UAS Facility Map, up to 400 feet.
Unfortunately the Mavic Mini can only use the DJI Fly app at the time of writing and won't be added to the Go4 app. You can try and download the DJI Fly app APK from the DJI website; but your phone needs to be 64bit and running a 64bit version of Android in order to get DJI Fly running.
DJI's GEO System delineates where it is safe to fly, where flight may raise concerns, and where flight is restricted. If a flight within one of these locations has been authorized, GEO allows users with verified DJI accounts to temporarily unlock or self-authorize their flights.
Just go to the DJI Fly Safe section and select unlock a zone. Select custom unlocking and input location, the zone you are in (amongst other items), and in the comments area add "Practice Flying - Indoors Only". Also, set altitude to 0 as you will be indoors.
Self Unlock
- Select the model of drone for this operation from the drop-down menu.
- Using the search bar within the Geo Map, enter the flight location address.
- Select the blue pin that covers the zone you want to unlock (remember, blue = Self Unlock zone).
Drones and trespass. It is also possible for a drone flight over or around your house to become an issue of trespass. So a drone that repeatedly flies over your house can be a trespass unless it flies so high that it is unnoticeable.
The maximum allowable altitude is 400 feet above the ground, higher if your drone remains within 400 feet of a structure. Maximum speed is 100 mph (87 knots). Your drone can carry an external load if it is securely attached and does not adversely affect the flight characteristics or controllability of the aircraft.
FAA licensed drone operators may fly over the parks and beaches which are banned because they go through stringent testing which teach them about the safe drone operation. You need to obtain a City permit to operate the drone for commercial purposes.

Around all aerodromes and airports, there's an exclusion zone (restricted airspace) of 2-2.5 nautical miles, with a 5km long and 1km wide exclusion at both ends of each runway. Restricted airspace means that you cannot fly in these places unless you've got permission from the relevant authority.
Do not fly at night unless your drone has lighting that allows you to know its location and orientation at all times. Give way to and do not interfere with manned aircraft. Never fly over any person or moving vehicle.
Do You Need a License to Fly a Drone—The Only Exception to the Rule. The only exception to the licensing requirements for commercial drone pilots is for commercial drone pilots who are already licensed to fly manned aircraft. If you are a licensed helicopter or airplane pilot, this section is for you.
Drones are not allowed at the Sign, nor in all of Griffith Park as per Los Angeles Rec & Parks Ordinance No. 176,929.
Most mid to high-end drones have the capability to fly around 5 km or more. And as technology and battery life improves, it's not uncommon for some drones to be able to fly 10 km or more. For example, DJI's Mavic Air 2 has the potential to fly up to 18 km away from the controller, with a 10 km video transmission range.
