When combined will make a darker golden or aged color.
Mix in a small quantity of brown paint (approximately one part brown to 10 parts yellow), using the palette knife. Keep in mind that it's always easier to darken your paint than it is to lighten it, so start with small amounts and gradually add more until you start to achieve a gold-like hue.
To make a deep gold color, combine equal parts black, red, and yellow. Once you mix your gold color, you can adjust the tone by adding yellow, red, blue, or white until it's the color you want. How do you make gold paint darker?

All you need to do is mix the gloss medium into the paint on the palette, and then paint as normal. The paint should dry to a glossy finish. To achieve even more gloss, apply a high gloss varnish once the painting is finished and the paint is dry.
Oil paint takes six months or more to completely dry, so applying metal leaf on top of oil paint is not advised because the adhesive (gold size) will prevent the oil from finishing drying and making a stable structure.May 19, 2020
Gold Leafing Steps
- Prepare Surface. Paint the surface a color.
- Apply adhesive. Choose water-based or solvent-based leaf adhesive (also called gilding or leaf sizing).
- Apply Leaf.
- Burnish.
- Clean Excess.
- Pre-Paint Sealing: Seal Leaf Before Overpainting.
- Paint.
- Post-Paint Sealing- final painting topcoat.
Try rubbing the bright gold with a pinch of rottenstone; this may dull the gold enough to do the job. A light touch of a clear coat over the frame would seal it. Caution, try the clear coat on a tiny area to be sure it will not lift the finish.Feb 22, 2007
