Plaster of Paris is a simple craft material that can be easily made at home. All you need is flour and water, or glue and water if you'd rather not handle flour. Once you've made it, you can use it to make plaster casts, molds, or even chalk!
Plaster of Paris is even easier to make. As noted above, it's literally flour, water, and salt. A larger batch — better for molds or large repairs — can be made by adding two cups of warm water to three cups of sifted flour (and some salt, roughly half a cup, if you'd like). Then, just mix it till the lumps are gone.
Alternatives to Plaster

Mix three parts of plaster to one part glue and one part water and stir until mixture is the consistency of cake frosting. Spoon mixture into cake decorating bag and add tip.
Method:
- To make the plaster mix, stir two cups of patch plaster or plaster of Paris and one and a quarter cups water in a tin can.
- To make a cast of your child's hand or footprint, pour one inch of plaster mix into a paper plate.
- Have your child press her hand or foot gently into the plaster.
Plaster of Paris is generally used to repair damages in plaster walls or is poured into molds to produce intricate and detailed trim or pendants. It doesn't shrink or crack when it dries but its soft enough that you could hand carve or alter the design with a sharp chisel.

2-Ingredient White Clay Dough
- 1 cup baking soda (bicarbonate soda)
- 1/2 cup corn starch (corn flour in the UK)
- 3/4 cup of warm water.
Mix Plaster of Paris in two separate containers, one thin and one thick (consistency of wet clay). Dip gauze bandages in the thin plaster mix and wrap it around the paper to make the shape of the volcanos.
Instructions
- Mix together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
- Mix together ½ cup of warm water with a few drops of food coloring.

Remove all dust and stains from the plaster, and apply the wash as long as it is absorbed. When dry, rub with a soft leather or brush.
Plaster of Paris is an extremely porous material when dried, and as such, will absorb any new water that touches its surface. In order to waterproof plaster of Paris for outdoor use or for temporary exposure to water, you must fill in as many surface pores as possible.
Finished plaster objects present fewer problems as the finishes are often quite durable. In addition to the dry cleaning methods already described, these items can usually be cleaned with cotton swabs moistened with distilled water to which a little detergent has been added.
I would sand the plaster first with something like 400 grit paper, then spray on several coats of a sandable primer. (Make sure the spray can says it is sandable.) Sand that smooth with 400 paper and spray on several coats of an enamel or a lacquer. When dry, maybe two days, sand that with 400 and then 600 paper.

Statues and other decorative pieces are fired and then covered with a colour and a shiny finish known as glaze. With a little practice you will be able to make your own pieces from start to finish.
Can you bake plaster of Paris? Insert the tray into the oven and turn your oven on. Set it to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the oven to heat for 20 minutes before increasing the temperature to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
