To prevent a running bamboo fromspreading, a “rhizome barrier” is essential. Abarrier two or three feet deep is effective. It should be slantedoutward at the top so that when the rhizomes hit the barrier theywill bend upwards. A barrier does not stop a runningrhizome; it only deflects it.
If you already have a bamboo plant in apot or in the landscape, it's simple to propagate by cuttingsections of the stem and replanting them, a method calledculm-segment cutting. Cut a bamboo cane intosections containing two to three nodes, the places along abamboo cane where the leaves grow from.
Running bamboo spread at moderate to fastpaces.
They have a leptomorph rhizome system, which means therhizomes don't usually turn up and become canes. Instead, as theypush through the soil the lateral buds produce either canes or newrhizomes perpendicular to the parent rhizome. The Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys Nigra) is abeautiful architectural plant and it is possible tosplit them but I would wait until you canobtain two decent sized plants before doing so. The besttime for splitting your Bamboo is latespring.
Running Bamboo
- Propagate running bamboo in early spring on a cool, wind-freeday, before new culms sprout.
- Select sections of rhizomes that have at least two to fourculms with buds and two nodes.
- Cover the base of the parent plant with soil immediately.
- Water the parent plant and rhizome thoroughly.
Remember, the best time to divide clumpingbamboo, such as the Fargesia 'Rufa' shown here, is early spring(March to May, depending on location), before the bambooshoots. 1. Water the plant heavily at least 24 hours prior todividing. This helps to ensure healthy transplants andfacilitates the division process.
Cut the lucky bamboo stalk off an inch above thenode. The part that is still attached to the roots will form newleaves and the part (top) that is left will become a new luckybamboo stalk. Dip the cut end of the top in rooting hormone andlet dry.
If you put the bamboo into the ground, it willlast up to 2 years, then it will rot off at the groundlevel. Above the ground the bamboo will last many, manyyears. If outdoors in the elements it will likelylast more than 10 years. It is naturally rot and pestresistant.
While there are hundreds of varieties of bamboo, most can be propagated by cuttings. This process involvesselecting a young healthy bamboo stock, cutting off a smallsection and allowing to grow in water until rootsappear from the base of the cut stock. One mature stockcan produce several new bamboo plants.
Pruning is the cutting and removal of culms, branches or leaves of the bamboo. This can be donewith sharp pruners, loppers or even a saw depending on how thickthe culm is. Note that once any part of the bamboo iscut, it will not grow back. When pruning bambooculms, make cuts just above the culm node.
A: Ideally, you cut the bamboo and letthem stay in the stand until they lose their leaves and startturning brown - in the process they lose starch content and water.Soaking in water also dissolves and leaches starch. Storing in thesilo sounds like a good drying place - in the shade, withventilation.
You can also top (remove the upperportion) bamboo to create a lush topiary appearance. Oncetopped, bamboo will never grow vertically again. Make surethat you leave some viable limbs and cut about 1/4 ofan inch above the node when you top bamboo. Without limbs, the cane cannot survive.
Method 1Harvesting Edible Shoots
- Harvest bamboo at the start of the dry season.
- Choose shoots less than 6 in (15 cm) tall with a widebase.
- Use loppers to harvest bamboo less than 1.5 in (3.8 cm)thick.
- Dig the base with a shovel to get the whole shoot.
- Peel the skin off of the bamboo.
Rooting lucky bamboo in soil.
Lucky bamboo will also readily root in soil. Toroot a new plant, gently push the trimmed stalk down intofresh potting soil, making sure that at least one root node isbeneath the soil level. Keep the plant moist and warm untilnew growth begins to emerge.Place the pot over medium heat, bring the water to aboil and adjust the heat to maintain a steady simmer. Do notlet it boil vigorously. Cook the shoots for 45to 50 minutes, or until a skewer or wooden toothpick meetsno resistance as it passes through the core.
The world record for the fastest growing plantbelongs to certain species of the 45 genera of bamboo, whichhave been found to grow at up to 91 cm (35 in) per day or ata rate of 0.00003 km/h (0.00002 mph). According to the RHSDictionary of Gardening, there are approximately 1,000 species ofbamboos.
Edible Bamboo Species. Edible meaning asatisfactory to delicious taste, because even though some bambooshoots are classified as edible, they must be carefullyprepared and boiled before consuming! Bamboo shoots maycontain significant, potentially very toxic amounts of cyanogenicglycosides.
Bamboo takes about three years to getestablished. Once established the new shoots that emerge in theSpring (they will still only grow for 60 days) will continueto get bigger and more numerous from year to year as the colonygrows towards maturity.
If you leave
bamboo to air dry, it can take 6 to 12weeks. However, there are shorter methods to
cure bamboo forat home projects.
Use heat to cure the bamboo.
- Turn the heat to high.
- Take an old rag and rub the resin into the bamboo culms.
- Wait for the culm to be cool enough to handle.
Put the saucepan onto a heat source until thewater is boiling and then leave the sticks in thewater to cool. Take one stick from the water.Carefully start gently bending the stick into a circularshape. At this stage, you are simply flexing the wood.
