Diesel engines are shut down by cutting off the fuel supply in the injector pump. H, 2H have an EDIC motor which operates the fuel rack on the injector pump, it has 3 positions, super fuel (for starting), Run , and shutdown.
Also known as ASOV, AISV, ESD or emergency shutdown valves, air intake shut off valves are systems that allows for emergency over speed shutdown and protection for diesel engines. They are by far the most efficient systems are used to prevent engines getting into runway situations today.
When you no longer need the generator's power, or when you need to refuel the generator, you should turn the machine off. First, flip the circuit breaker to the “OFF†position. Then, turn off the machine using the generator's power switch or key. Finally, set the generator's fuel valve to the “OFF†position.
Four Reasons Why Your Generator Fails to Start
- Battery Failure. One of the most common reasons a generator will not start is due to a battery failure.
- Low Coolant Levels. Without radiator coolant, an engine would soon overheat, leading to mechanical breakdown and engine failure.
- Bad Fuel Mix.
- Controls Not In Auto.
The engine of a standby generator is a lot like a car engine. Although you need fuel to make the engine run, you also have to have a battery that runs the electronic components. So essentially, the generator does start with the battery, as it wouldn't be able to start without it.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the generator for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and prevent the engine from starting.
To start a generator with key starter, turn the key clockwise. Do not use the key for more than 5 seconds at a time. If the key fails to start allow sufficient time for the starter to cool before trying again. Once the generator starts you should move to step 8.
Different Modes For Starting Diesel Generator (DG) Set
- Push-button (Manual)
- Autostart (Auto)
- Test mode (For the testing purpose) Note: The mode of operation can be selected by means of the selector switch.
- Push Button Start/ Manual Mode:
- Auto Starting System/ Auto mode:
- Test mode.
Procedure for Automatic StartAfter opening the breaker, the emergency generator starts automatically with the help of batteries and will supply essential power to machinery and pumps connected to ESB. For stopping the generator, the breaker is closed again and due to the interlock the generator becomes off load.
On many generators, it can be found directly above the air filter on the side of the unit. On others, the choke is builtin to the power control knob (such as with the WEN Inverter series). Either way, it should be set to closed (also referred to as the start or the choke position) when starting the generator.
Starting a Generator without Keys
- Standing on the panel side (outlet side) of the generator, locate the group of wires directly under the ignition switch.
- Locate the black wire with a soft black rubber covering on the connection point.
Automatic OperationThe generator system detects a power outage immediately and waits a few seconds for the power to return. It all happens just seconds after the power goes out. When the utility power is restored, the system reconnects the utility lines and shuts the generator down.
Assuming you've hooked up a 50% load, you can expect Generac's portable generators to give you about 10 hours of continuous and stable power supply on a full tank. The narrative is a little different if you went for the more powerful models since at 50% load, you can get up to 30 hours of continuous run time.
The purpose of a battery is obviously to support the main generator in giving power. Think of a diesel generator battery as the heart of the generator. Without it, well needed blood, or in this case power, would never be able to make it to the main generator itself, leaving it powerless.
For an extra measure of safety, switch your main fuses or circuit breakers to the “OFF†position. Be sure you understand them before hooking up the generator. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to properly ground the generator. Generators emit carbon monoxide.
To sum up, a portable gasoline generator can run continuously on a tank of gas but not longer without stopping. Typically 12-18 hours. Using a large propane tank, you will find that your limiting factor is probably mechanical in nature (typically engine oil). For most propane generators that means around 5-8 days.
