Bird breeders and recreational owners can now keep rainbow lorikeets without a licence after a revision of the regulations. The National Parks Service's revised list of native birds has added three species that have seen an increase in illegal trafficking.
It is illegal to keep a wild bird as a pet. You will be endangering any other bird that you or it comes into contact with. Injured and sick lorikeets or any other wild birds should be treated professionally and appropriately and released back into the wild wherever possible.
You can try to build the trust between you and your lory or lorikeet by sharing food. Birds often feed each other, so offering the bird food can help establish that trust and relationship. Try feeding them different foods so they can stay curious and learn to trust you.
It is surprising how much time must be dedicated to a hand-reared bird but for them, their owner is their companion and since lorikeets are highly gregarious it is essential that they are given plenty of attention. The lorikeets will bond with each other and so not demand so much time from the owner.
Housing – Cage's. Rainbow Lorikeets are an active, playful bird that needs suficient room to move around, stretch their wing and play with toys. When choosing a cage keep this in mind and remember the bigger the cage the better off the bird will be. Select toys that can be chewed, wrestled and played with.
Budgerigars are excellent talkers as are Eclectus, African Greys, Long-billed Corellas and Sulphur-crested cockatoos. Lorikeets, Ringneck parrots, Major Mitchells, Amazons, Galahs and Twenty-eights are also good talkers. Other parrots will communicate by making sounds but will not actually form words.
Dimorphism. Unlike the eclectus parrot, rainbow lorikeets do not have any immediately discernible dimorphic traits. Males and females look identical, and surgical sexing by a vet or DNA analysis of a feather is used to determine the sex of an individual.
While it's impossible to tell the exact age of your lorikeet without getting his birth date from the breeder, you can estimate his age during the first year of life. If your bird is already mature, your veterinarian may be able to provide an approximate age by examining her.
A variety of fresh, seasonal fruit should also be made available – apple melon, grapes, citrus, pawpaw, banana, mango, lychee, stone fruit etc. Some vegetables can be offered, however, the lorikeets will tend to 'pigout' on sweet corn, so don't overdo it. Never feed fatty, salty, processed human foods.
Lorikeets cannot eat processed foods such as biscuits or bread. They have a sweet tooth. However, their digestive system cannot cope with artificially refined sugar. They have delicate beaks that can be damaged by eating grains or bread.
We provide all of these when available but apples, pears and nashi are amongst the lories favourite fruit and are just about always available. Usually blended whole fruit, some fruit juice, honey or sugar, hot or cold water, cereal such as WeetBix or Corn flakes and perhaps bird vitamin supplements.
