Once the holes are drilled, two shims called feathers or half-rounds are placed in the hole and a wedge called a plug is placed between the two feathers. Using a sledgehammer, the plugs are then struck with hammer in sequence. An audible tone from the wedges changes to a 'ringing sound' when the wedges are tight.
The hammering action fragments the rock at the bit tip, and then the rotating flutes dust off the dirt. Core bits are also rock drill bits that can be used to drill wide holes in rocks.
Rocks are infamously durable and can be an eyesore in a garden, in a landscaping project or it may just be in the way. The problem usually is that the rock is too heavily embedded or it's simply too heavy to lift or roll out of the way. By breaking a rock you can decrease the load and remove it in a safer manner.
Dremel, Foredom or similar rotary tool, preferably with a flex-shaft attachment (can be done without the flex-shaft, but will be much easier with). Container deep enough for the stone being drilled, but not so deep you can't comfortably hold the stone in place.

Rock splitting utilizes a tensional force to crack the rock. This is achieved by inserting a split steel shank in a drillhole and driving a steel wedge between the center of the split shank thereby producing the tensile forces.
For smaller rocks, a rock hammer/pick or household hammer will work fine. Put the bag of rocks on a firm surface (concrete or asphalt), and knock gently. Slowly apply more pressure, until you feel the rocks start to break. Check your progress, remove rocks that are already small enough, then continue.
“Split Rock” tends to need a bit less water than other succulents. It's best to use the “soak and dry” method, and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during the winter. Over-watering can cause your “Split Rock” to burst or rot.
Squeeze the trigger of the drill slowly at first. Gain speed as you apply more downward pressure. Allow the tip of the drill bit to penetrate the surface of the rock. Apply more pressure, increase the speed of the drill, keep the bit perfectly straight and drill into the rock until the desired depth is reached.
They consider the breakdown of rock into smaller and smaller pieces through processes that collectively are known as weathering. In nature, abrasion occurs as wind and water rush over rocks, causing them to bump against one another and changing their shapes. Rocks become smoother as rough and jagged edges break off.
Turn on the circular saw's motor, and lower the saw's blade gradually onto one edge of the chalk or pencil line on the paver's upward-facing side. Use the saw to cut straight along the line across the paver, moving the blade slowly to the opposite side of the paver.
Turn on the Dremel tool. Using the grinding tip, grind the entire surface. Grind away the rough edges evenly by making the tool at a flat angle against the gem. Switch to 800 grit bit and continue the grinding process.
You can cut rock with a hammer and chisel by placing your chisel's tip on the part of the stone that you want to break. Then you'll need the chisel and cut a line across the stone where you want the break. Once you find that position, put the chisel at an angle and hit the chisel with your hammer across the line.
I believe the way to split stone, is to go along the line where you want it to break, and lightly fracture the line, with a chisel. Then whack the chisel against the line very hard. Since the line already fractured, is now the "weakest" part of the stone, it will (or at should) break along the line.
Stonemasons use a wide variety of tools to handle and shape stone blocks (ashlar) and slabs into finished articles. The basic tools for shaping the stone are a mallet, chisels, and a metal straight edge. With these one can make a flat surface – the basis of all stonemasonry.
