After going further into The Metamorphosis, the story reveals that Gregor 's father had the capability to pay off his own debts entire time. Not only did Mr.Samsa abuse Gregor by having him pay off the debts, he used Gregor for his own selfish ways.
When Gregor climbs under the couch, he does so in order to spare his family the pain of having to see him. His hiding, however, is an escapist move. It was escapism that seems to have brought on his metamorphosis, allowing him to find freedom from work.
Gregor's transformation is a symbol of how he has been dehumanized by his job and family. He is treated more like an insect than a human being, so he becomes an insect. His new outward form represents how he feels on the inside. Gregor hates his job: like an ant, he endlessly toils at stressful, unsatisfying labor.
After Gregor dies in pain and completely isolated, his family does not mourn his passing. In fact, they do the opposite: they experience immense relief, as though a burden has been lifted from their collective shoulders. Mr. Samsa even thanks God that his son is dead.
He backs up, turns around, and runs out. Why does Gregor's mother scream? Gregor is starting to move (like a bug), and his jaws were snapping at the site of coffee.
What do the three tenants symbolize in the story? The three tenants in the story represent outside people; something like the people Gregor used to work with (an outside view of him different from the family) that Gregor was already initially disconnected from.
The motherGregor's mother. Frail and distressed, the mother is torn between her love for Gregor and her horror at Gregor's new state. Grete and Gregor's father seek to protect her from the full reality of her son's transformation.
His mother, Mrs. Samsa, is distressed at the transformation, overwhelmed by emotion and grief. She tries her best to console him and help him, but she can't bear to look at him. In her grief, she tries her best to act with motherly affection, but has a difficult time overcoming his appearance.
How does the father react when he thinks Gregor attacked the mother? He chases Gregor and throws fruit at him.
The transformation has torn away their hope at getting out of their situation and enrages Gregor's father, which is why he reacts so violently and angrily. Gregor, unable to communicate except with unintelligible growls and hisses, wallows in misery because he has disappointed his family.
Gregor's mother, like Gregor's father, is elderly and sick (she has asthma), but she also returns to work, as an underwear seamstress, when he transforms.
While Grete tends to and cleans up after Gregor, Mr. and Mrs. Samsa avoid Gregor's bedroom for two weeks. Gregor learns that his mother wants to visit him, but his sister and father keep her away, fearing she cannot handle it.
