Yes Calais is safe to travel to & worthwhile IMO. Calais has some good restaurants, small area where fresh fish is sold & a small market, plenty of shops. Boulogne is more charming & close by car, a stop in Wimereux for lunch by the sea in one of the many restaurants is a nice thing to do.
Poitiers is on the World Heritage list as part of the French network of cities on the Way of Saint James, and it's worth visiting, even should you have been originally drawn to this area of western France by the nearby Futuroscope theme park.

Dunkirk – a Great Place to Visit. Many people, when they think of crossing the Channel think of Calais as the French destination. Dunkirk, served by the DFDS ferries from Dover, is the lesser known alternative but it's well worth visiting.
Arras is a city we sometimes stop off at. I can't say I know it well, but the centre is quite pretty, grand even, with its two main squares and arcades. I'd say it is definitely worth visiting if in the region, but I don't know enough in depth to say how long to stay for.
