On 2 December 2019, BBC One announced that Shetland would return for two further series airing respectively in 2020 and 2021. Henshall is confirmed to return to his role, along with O'Donnell.

Designed in 1969 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the transfer of Shetland from Norway to Scotland, the colours come from the Scottish flag, and the cross shape from Scandinavian tradition.
How did the character of Jimmy Perez come about? A. I wanted a central character who was a Shetlander but still felt like an outsider. So I made him a Fair Islander and gave him a Spanish name.
The last time Shetland was updated on Netflix was back in April 2017 when Netflix put all of the first three seasons available. Since then, the BBC has put two new seasons out with season 4 releasing in 2018 and most recently the fifth dropping in January 2019.
One of thee best detective series ever. Reflects true life as it really is. Some people obviously prefer the flippant unrealistic mystery shows shown on cable TV. Shetland is wonderful, stories, scenery and acting all superb.
