Measure the grounds – The standard measurement for coffee is 6 ounces of fresh water to 2 tablespoons ground coffee. Most coffee lovers will quote a standard “3 tablespoons for 12 fl oz”. It's easy to measure out – and will save you the frustration of using up your grounds (and cash) too quickly.
The SCAA defines 10 grams or 0.36 oz. per 6-oz cup as the proper measure for brewed coffee using the American standards.
When a pound of whole coffee beans is ground, it may well take up less volume in a package, but the weight does not change. Keep in mind we buy coffee by weight, but measure coffee by volume.
Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two "energy shot" drinks. Keep in mind that the actual caffeine content in beverages varies widely, especially among energy drinks.
Use 8 ounces water + 2 tablespoons ground coffeeIf you don't like your coffee too strong, you can use 1 – 1 1/2 tablespoon coffee per cup if you prefer. How many cups of coffee in a pot: When making your coffee, remember that standard US cup equals 8 fl ounces, while a coffee pot cup is just 5 ounces.
For making 6 cups, we recommend 10 Tablespoons or ~ 60 grams of coffee. For making 8 cups, we think 14 Tablespoons or ~80 grams of coffee is a good starting point. You may need to use more or less coffee, depending on your preferred coffee strength.
The general rule of thumb is one to two tablespoons of coffee per six ounces of water, but exact measurements will be up to your personal preferences.
To weigh your coffee, we recommend using basic kitchen scales or for those who want to be extra precise, high-tech scales like the Acaia Pearl. For those without a scale, using tablespoons and ounces to measure coffee or water, follow the ratio of 1:4. 1 tablespoon of coffee for every 4 ounces of water.
For one cup (8 fluid oz.), you will need to use about 2.5 level tablespoons or about 18 grams (more or less depending on taste) of whole bean coffee. Grind to a medium-coarse level that looks somewhere between table salt and kosher salt. Place your pourover brewer on top of your mug.
Coffee-to-Water RatioA general guideline is called the "Golden Ratio" - one to two tablespoons of ground coffee for every six ounces of water. This can be adjusted to suit individual taste preferences.

A level coffee scoop should hold two tablespoons of coffee, which is approximately 10 grams or 0.36 ounces.
Using the same method, a shot of espresso made with 7g of ground coffee maxes out around 70mg caffeine (77mg if 10% Robusta sometimes typical for Espresso blends), but the serving size and strength are more standardized than brewed coffee, so the 64mg/shot reported by the USDA and others also ends up being 80-90% of

- Multiply the volume of coffee beans (20 g) by the desired ratio of 1:15.
- 20 × 15 = 300. That means you would need 300 g of water to make a cup of coffee that has a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15.
