Full width designs are typically used for minimal content websites and ones where images are more important than text. Full width can provide a fully immersive web browsing experience. The boundaries between the more traditional 'website' and 'visual experience' are blurred.
“Anything from 45 to 75 characters is widely regarded as a satisfactory length of line for a single-column page set in a serifed text face in a text size. The 66-character line(counting both letters and spaces) is widely regarded as ideal. For multiple column work, a better average is 40 to 50 characters.”
In typography, rivers (or rivers of white) are gaps in typesetting which appear to run through a paragraph of text due to a coincidental alignment of spaces. Rivers can occur regardless of the spacing settings, but are most noticeable with wide inter-word spaces caused by full text justification or monospaced fonts.
In typography, line length is the width of a block of typeset text, usually measured in units of length like inches or points or in characters per line (in which case it is a measure). In a ragged right setting line lengths vary to create a ragged right edge of lines varying in length.
An Exact Number of Lines Per Page. Martha is a court reporter and she is typing a deposition. She must get exactly 25 lines on a letter-sized page, double spaced (Courier New), 12 pitch. She is supposed to have a one-inch margin all the way around, but must decrease the bottom margin to get 25 lines.
An SMS text message limit is 160. Pinterest pins can have up to 500 characters. Instagram captions and comments can fetch 2,200 characters. N.B: A space or punctuation is a "character".
The math works like this: Sixty characters per line at an average of six characters per word (a publishing industry rule of thumb) works out to an average of ten words per line. A 25 line page, then, will have an average of 250 words—a nice big round number. Four pages is about a thousand words.
Proportional and Non-proportional Fonts. A proportional font uses varying widths to display each of its letters and symbols, while a non-proportional font uses the same fixed width to display its characters. Some of the most popular proportional fonts are Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana and Georgia.
A monospaced font, also called a fixed-pitch, fixed-width, or non-proportional font, is a font whose letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal space. [] Examples of monospaced fonts include Courier, Courier New, Lucida Console, Monaco, and Consolas.
AND FONT SIZE
Font sizes are measured in points; 1 point (abbreviated pt) is equal to 1/72 of an inch. The point size refers to the height of a character. Thus, a 12-pt font is 1/6 inch in height. The default font size in Microsoft Word 2010 is 11 pts.A font is often measured in pt (points). Points dictate the height of the lettering. There are approximately 72 (72.272) points in one inch or 2.54 cm. For example, the font size 72 would be about one inch tall, and 36 would be about a half of an inch.
Font SizeEdit
This gets tiring. Compact-width fonts, e.g., Times Roman, look best in 11 or 12 points. Wider fonts, e.g., Palatino, look best in a smaller font size, usually 10 or 11 points. "Large print" books are at least 14 points.Comparison table
| Point | Metric size | American system |
|---|
| American |
|---|
| 8 | ≈ 2.822 mm | Brevier |
| 9 | ≈ 3.175 mm | Bourgeois |
| 10 | ≈ 3.528 mm | Long Primer |
Change font size
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Font size.
- Use the slider to choose your font size.
| Letter Height | Font Size Equivalent | Best Legibility |
|---|
| 1” | 72 pt. | 1' |
| 1.5” | 105 pt. | 15' |
| 2” | 144 pt. | 20' |
| 3” | 216 pt. | 30' |
How to tell if a font is monospaced
- Go into your graphic design program and create a new text box.
- On the first line write, “111111111”
- Hit enter and on the next line write, “999999999”
- Compare the two lines of text. If the 1s and 9s line up, the font is monospaced. If they don't, it's proportional.
The number of feet in each line can be listed. For example, a poem whose first line is a pentameter, whose second line is a trimeter and whose third line is a pentameter would be described as 5, 3, 5. A length diagram would show this by lines 5 units long, 3 units long and 5 units long.
For easiest online reading, use Arial 12-point size and larger. If you're going smaller than 12 points, Verdana at 10 points is your best choice. If you're after a formal look, use the font "Georgia." And for older readers, use at least a 14-point font.
In typography, kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result.
Line length is the distance between the left and right edges of a text block. Overly long lines are a common problem, but they're easy to correct. Shorter lines will make a big difference in the legibility and professionalism of your layout. The most useful way to measure line length is by average characters per line.

Those requirement have mostly gone away now, but there are still valid reasons to keep the 80 column rule: To avoid wrapping when copying code into email, web pages, and books. To view multiple source windows side-by-side or using a side-by-side diff viewer. To improve readability.
The optimal line length for your body text is considered to be 50-60 characters per line, including spaces (“Typographie”, E. Ruder). Other sources suggest that up to 75 characters is acceptable.
It means each line. It includes spaces, periods and everything. So it would be exactly 120 lines long of 80 characters.
Column is an accepted word in Word with Friends having 15 points. Column is a 6 letter medium Word starting with C and ending with N. Below are Total 23 words made out of this word.
Another reason for the 72-character limit was that common fonts were 10 points high and 6 points (1/12") wide. An A4 or 8.5" wide page could hold 72 characters in a 6" wide column and still have room for margins of over an inch.
In my experience, a written page of A4 runs about 300 - 350 words.
