All HN qualifications are made up of Higher National Unit credits (one credit represents roughly 40 hours of timetabled learning and 40 hours of self-guided learning and study). HNCs are made up of 12 credits and usually take one year to complete (some centres may offer 15 credits).
How long does it take to study a HND or HNC? A HND is studied over two years full-time or three years part-time. A HNC is studied over one year full-time or two years part-time. You can often study a HND in one year if you have completed a relevant HNC course first.
The recommended qualification for entry to an HNC or HND course is one of the following:
- a programme of national Units appropriate to the course you want to study.
- two passes at Higher or above.
- an equivalent qualification.
A Higher National Certificate / Diploma (HNC/D) is a Level 4/5 qualification. The HNC is equivalent to the first year. of a university degree programme. The HND is equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree.
WHAT HAPPENS IF FAIL? If you fail the project you cannot achieve your HNC (you need to pass each stage of the project) You can request to be assessed for the unit again, however, thismust be done using asubstantially different project, ie all stages are undertaken using a new project.
Higher National Certificates (HNC) & Higher National Diplomas (HND) HNCs and HNDs are highly-regarded by employers. They are also accepted for entry to many university degrees. In fact, with an HNC/HND, some universities will let you progress directly into the second or third year of a degree course.
COMPENSATION PROVISIONS HNCStudents are awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction qualification grade using the points gained through all 120 credits, at Level 4 for the HNC or Level 5 for the HND, based on unit achievement.
BTEC HNC and HND courses are not equal in qualification value. HNC qualification is one level below an HND course so that HNC courses are equivalent to studying one year at university, while HND course are the same as studying two years at university.
Higher Courses are usually made up of three Units and an external assessment — an examination or a project — all at the level of the Course. Each Higher Unit is worth 6 credits at level 6. There may be a choice of Units available.
What are Scottish Highers? Simply put, Scottish Highers are the Scottish equivalent to A-Levels. They are courses that students aged 16-18 in Scotland sit that can lead to university, further study, training or work. You normally take on four to five Highers and start them in the fifth year of secondary school.
Scottish Higher and Advanced HigherThese are the Scottish equivalents to the English AS, A2 and A-level in applied subjects courses. Students in their last two years at school (generally aged 17 or 18 years) usually study five subjects in the first year and three of these for a further year.
The Higher has been awarded for over 100 years. During that time it has undergone a number of reforms. It has always had the purpose of providing qualifications for progression to Higher Education or employment. SCQF level 6 is the standard level for progression to HE.
A Higher National Diploma (HND) takes one year to complete and is only undertaken after successful completion of the relevant HNC. It is a valuable higher level qualification which can lead to employment. Alternatively graduates on some courses can transfer to the second or third year of a university degree course.
Level 4. Level 4 qualifications are: certificate of higher education ( CertHE ) higher apprenticeship. higher national certificate ( HNC )
Foundation degrees are at Level 5 in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications, below bachelor's degrees at level 6. Courses are typically two years full-time study or longer part-time, and it is often possible to 'top up' to a bachelor's degree with a further year of study.
Level 7 refers to a level of education equivalent to a master's degree, and is generally attained in a centre for further education. Examples of Level 7 qualifications include: Postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) Postgraduate diplomas and certificates.
Child benefit is only paid for full-time, "non-advanced education". The Scottish Qualifications Authority defines the Scottish HNC as equivalent to the English BTEC national diploma. Courses last two years, with students taking an NQ (National Qualification) in the first year, then the HNC.
A Level 3 qualification is equivalent to A Level. A Level 4 qualification is equivalent to BTEC Professional Diploma level. A Level 5 qualification is equivalent to HND or foundation degree level. A Level 6 qualification is equivalent to Bachelor's Degree level.
Qualifications Explained: HNCs / HNDs, Top-ups and Foundation Degrees. A Foundation Degree is a Level 5 qualification – equivalent to the first two years of a degree level programme – that combines work based learning and academic study.
To study for an HNC or HND, you will need some previous qualifications. Most HND courses require one A level or an equivalent qualification. If you have a Foundation degree, you may be able to enter a degree course at the start of the third or final year.
NVQ Level 2 equivalent – 4-5 GCSE grades A*-C. NVQ Level 3 equivalent – 2 A Levels. NVQ Level 4 equivalent – Higher Education Certificate/BTEC. NVQ Level 5 equivalent – Higher Education Diploma/Foundation Degree.
First-Class Honours (70% and above): a first class degree, usually referred to as a 'first' or 1st, is the highest honours degree you can achieve. Upper Second-Class Honours (60-70%): there are two levels of second class degree. An upper second class, known as a 2:1 or two-one, is the higher of the two levels.
An Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) is a further education qualification in the United Kingdom, awarded by BTEC. It is at Level 3, equivalent to A Levels.
A General Engineering HNC will also open doors to further levels of academic study. On completion of this course, you could progress to HND courses of similar structure or relevant degree courses such as the BEng Manufacturing Engineering with us.
These are broadly equivalent to an HNC, and usually take a year of full-time study to complete. The certificate's value is 120 credits which are equal to one year of full-time study at undergraduate level, i.e. the first year of a degree.
