Often times people hate it more because of some of the people listening to it than the music itself. Dubstep is awesome but, like all great music, if you don't go looking for it you will only ever listen to the pop-crap that idiots who still think techno is cool come out with.
Dubstep hasn't died. Neither did any of those other genres. They've evolved, merged, and transformed, and EDM is the best it's ever been imo.
Why is it called Dubstep? It's called “dub” because like dub-reggae it was a kind of music stripped down to a slowish and minimal atmospheric drums and heavy bass. The “step” comes in because it was evolved from, and stripped down from, what was called “2 step garage”.

The earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998 and were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks attempting to incorporate the funky elements of breakbeat, or the dark elements of drum and bass into 2-step, which featured B-sides of single releases.

It has died, buried, and people have moved on with the rest of their lives. However, if you're looking at house music as an internal core engine or some sort of prime mover of musical expression in the current electronic dance base, it hasn't died. In fact, it's going stronger, bigger, and it has gone global.
EDM does not refer to a specific genre, but serves as an umbrella term for several commercially-popular genres, including techno, house, electro house, progressive house,deep house, tech house, trance, hardstyle, drum and bass, dubstep, trap, etc etc.
What is the difference between techno, trance, house, and electro music? The quickest way I can summarise this for you is that techno, trance and house all follow a similar rhythmic structure that is based on a four on the floor disco groove, while electro stemmed from hip-hop, and has a rhythm known as a breakbeat .
Very much so! Back in 2014, dubstep music started to decline in ratings as trap music began to rise to the top. Shortly after (in about 2016), future bass began growing in popularity as well. However, dubstep music is still very much alive and is making a comeback.
One common notion is that techno is faster than house. Most definitions have house starting around 115 whereas techno starts at 125 bpm. House has a smaller range only going up to around 135 whereas techno often goes all the way up to 150 beats per minute.
House is a specific type of electronic dance music usually identified by 303 basslines, 4/4 drum machine rhythms, and loops, riffs and instrumentation taken from or inspired by disco. but dance, to me, is a generalization given to music that has the four on the floor beat. to me.

The beginning of EDM can from the disco genre, heavily popular in the late 1970's. Disco music aimed to move crowds of people on the dancefloor, using drum machines and electronic instruments to create synthesized rhythms.

EDM is an umbrella for everything techno, house, breakbeat, downtempo, trance and whatever there is now. But nowadays EDM has become a term that is used to describe the kind of music, which is sort of like an enemy of techno.
