Just in case you were starting to panic, OneNote 2016 is not going away. At least, not right away. Microsoft will continue to provide support, bug fixes, and security updates for OneNote 2016 through October 2020 for mainstream support and October 2025 for extended support.
OneNote apps don't allow that choice. All notebooks have to be saved to OneDrive, whether you like it or not. That poses a privacy and security concern. OneNote Notebook Sections can be password protected but many users would prefer to keep their private notes entirely private by keeping them off the Internet.
In the latest versions of OneNote -- specifically, our apps on Windows 10, Mac, iOS, Android, and OneNote Online -- your notebooks are stored in the cloud so you can access them from anywhere. Notebooks stored only on your hard drive or a file share (called local notebooks) are not supported.
Because OneNote is cut from Microsoft's cloth, it has deep ties to OneDrive and other Microsoft apps. Sometimes that's useful and sometimes it just becomes confusing. OneNote is one of the best note-taking apps available. Whether you'll prefer it to Evernote comes down to what you value in an app and how you use it.
OneNote will still be able to open it. You just cannot share it very easily (or effectively). * this is not currently an option for iOS, Android or OSX versions of OneNote, your only option is to use OneDrive syncing. You don't 'need to put it on OneDrive', OneNote does!
Some of the main benefits of OneNote include;
- OneNote enables collaboration in real-time.
- OneNote secures sensitive information.
- You can use OneNote to record ideas and information on the go.
- You can support your notes with multimedia.
- OneNote can be integrated with other software.
Open Your Notebooks in OneNote
OneNote 2016 stores all of your notes from your notebooks, which by default are stored in your Documents folder in their own specific folder. Alternatively, they are stored on Microsoft OneDrive. You can also store notebooks on a shared location on your network, or anywhere you want.As a cloud storage service, OneDrive has many other security features. Those include: Virus scanning on download for known threats - The Windows Defender anti-malware engine scans documents at download time for content matching an AV signature (updated hourly).
OneNote automatically saves your notes while you work, but you should always back up your notebooks, just like the rest of your computer's files and data. Make sure you choose a location that's not on your computer's hard drive. Choose File > Options. In the OneNote Options dialog box, choose Save & Backup.
Microsoft's OneNote is now free. Once a Windows-only note-taking application included with Office, it's now a free cross-platform note-taking service for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and the web.
It's quite safe to store passwords on iPhone with a note-taking app, as long as others can't access to your phone and it won't lose or stolen.
All you need to do is long-hold on a section, tap the "Protect section" option at the bottom, and you are prompted to enter a password for it. Hit OK, and it is now password protected.
To recover OneNote password, launch OneNote Password Recovery. Click on Open Documents and select the OneNote file. Go to Recovery Tab and click on the Run button to begin the recovery process.
Value for Money: OneNote's Free Version Is Generous, Evernote Has a High Price Tag. It's hard to deny that OneNote offers better value for the money than Evernote. The free version of OneNote is more generous with storage and features than the free version of Evernote.
You cannot password protect entire notebooks in OneNote, only sections in notebooks. To password protect a section of a notebook, open the notebook containing the section you want to protect. Then, right-click on the section tab you want to protect and select “Password Protect This Section” from the popup menu.
Lock all your OneNote sections in one go
OneNote lets you lock all your sections with a single click, with a single password. Right-click on any of your sections and select 'Password Protect This Section' from the dropdown. From the task pane, click on 'Lock All' tab. You can also use the keyboard shortcut- Ctrl+Alt+L.Open the notebook you want to protect.
