The 'Nant' in 'Nantwich' is probably derived from the Old English 'Namet' (the most famous) or the Welsh 'Nant' (place in a river valley). For many years the industry thrived and by the 19th century Nantwich was one of the biggest salt producers in the country.
Buildings were made from a wooden frame and the gaps between the beams were filled with wattle (thin twigs) and daub (mud and even cattle dung). I like to think that Nantwich people were the best "wattle and daubers" for miles around - and gained the shortened name of "daubers" or Dabbers.
Nantwich Lake was constructed in the mid-1970s around the time of local government reorganisation in 1974 - the time when Nantwich Urban and Rural District Councils became part of Crewe and Nantwich Borough.
Tarporley is bypassed by the A49 and A51 roads, and holds a regular country market on the first Saturday of each month.
