What Are Side Effects of Nature-Throid?
- chest pain,

These patients and others feel much better on a natural thyroid medication which contain T3 and T4 and some amounts of T2, T1 and Calcitonin. In our practice most patients feel much better, with more energy, and relief of symptoms when switching from synthetic to a natural thyroid.
Today, some individuals prefer dessicated thyroid extract as a more “natural” thyroid hormone. In addition, some patients who continue to have symptoms of hypothyroidism when taking levothyroxine report improvement in these symptoms when switched to desiccated thyroid extract.
Symptoms of low thyroid hormone levels include tiredness, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heartbeat, or sensitivity to cold. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens or persists after several weeks of taking this medication.
Additionally, and importantly, the FDA has not approved it for use. Other brand names for desiccated thyroid are Nature-Throid, Westhroid, and NP Thyroid.
The products are being recalled because testing of samples from six (6) lots by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the samples to be sub potent. The product may have as low as 87% of the labeled amount of Liothyronine (T3) or Levothyroxine(T4).

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Acella Pharmaceuticals, LLC, is recalling certain "15-mg, 30-mg, 60-mg, 90-mg and 120-mg NP Thyroid®, Thyroid Tablets, USP [levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3)]." The company announced the voluntary recall on April 29.
Some people do say they feel best when they take it at night. Perhaps they are slow metabolizers. Dessicated thyroid (Armour, Nature-throid, WP-thyroid, Westhroid, NP thyroid): These medications are short acting (think 6-8 hours) so they are best taken in the during the waking hours.
Coffee/espresso taken 60 minutes after L-T4 ingestion had no significant effect on T4 intestinal absorption. It is prudent to remind patients that thyroid hormones should be separated from food and beverages (other than water), including coffee, by at least 30 to 60 minutes.
Supplements for general thyroid health
- Selenium. Selenium, a mineral needed for thyroid hormone production, helps protect the thyroid from damage caused by oxidative stress.
- Iodine. Iodine is critical for thyroid function.
- Zinc. The mineral zinc is required for thyroid hormone production.
- Iron.
The usual starting dose is 32.5 mg, with increment of 16.25 mg every 2 to 3 weeks. A lower starting dosage, 16.25 mg/day, is recommended in patients with longstanding myxedema, particularly if cardiovascular impairment is suspected, in which case extreme caution is recommended.

A. Armour Thyroid contains both thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) extracted from the thyroid gland of pigs. One grain, about 60 mg, of desiccated pig thyroid extract contains about 38mcg of T4 and 9mcg of T3, a ratio of around 4 to 1.

But contrary to popular belief, effective treatment with levothyroxine (LT4) to restore normal thyroid hormone levels is not associated with clinically significant weight loss in most people.
