A Unique Taxpayer Reference number is typically found on self assessment forms, like a statement or tax return. A tax reference number and tax code are usually found on a PAYE employer form, like a P45, P60, a payslip or PAYE Coding Notice from HMRC.
If you have forgotten your tax number you can request it from SARS in various ways: You can get it on eFiling if you are registered as an eFiler. All you need to do is log on and check your number. You can request it verbally from the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277.

An Income Tax Reference number is only issued by SARS when a person/entity registers for Income Tax purposes. While different numbers are issued for Valued Added Tax (VAT) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) we only require the Income Tax Reference numbers for CRS purpose.
Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals. If you're an Australian resident for tax purposes, and you can attend an interview at a participating Australia Post retail outlet, you can apply for a tax file number (TFN) online. Otherwise, you'll need to complete a paper form.
A South African Income Tax reference number is 10 numeric digits long. The tax reference number can only start with 0, 1, 2, 3 or 9 e.g. 0123456789.
You may receive your tax number by post some time after your in-branch registration in the form of an IT150 / Notification of registration (see below). If you would like to call SARS (0800 00 7277) to find out what the current status of your registration is, remember to have your ID number with you for the call.
If you have a PAYE number, then this number is the same number as the PAYE number, but replace the 7 at the beginning of the number with 'U'. If you do not have a PAYE number, then leave this number blank. You can find the UIF reference number on your EMP201 form, or on your tax clearance certificate.
Tax ID Numbers at a Glance
But you must obtain an EIN if you are a sole proprietor who files pension or excise tax returns. Even partnerships without non-partner employees are required to have tax ID numbers.The National Insurance Number may also be shown on a National Insurance card and on letters issued by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The number also appears on an employee's pay slip and on a Statement of Account issued by HMRC.
Know the terms – PAN, TAN and TIN
Permanent Account Number – A Permanent Account Number or PAN is a unique 10 digit alphanumeric code which is provided to every taxpayer or assessee in the country. A TIN is often called the VAT Number or Sales Tax Number and individuals should not confuse these terms.TINs always begin with the number 9. Similar to Social Security numbers, TINs take the XXX-XX-XXXX pattern. The fourth and fifth digits always fall in the 70-88, 90-92, and 94-99 ranges. People can apply for a TIN using IRS Form W-7 ("Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number").

If you have correspondence from HMRC then you can find your UTR number on your:
- Your HMRC Tax Return;
- HMRC Statement of Account;
- Payment Reminders or Late Payment Letters;
- Your SA250 which is a letter issued by HMRC when you first registered as self-employed.
You can find your National Insurance number on your payslip, P60, or letters about tax, pensions and benefits. You can also find it through your personal tax account and download a confirmation letter. If you still cannot find it, you can either: fill in form CA5403 and send it to the address on the form.
Also called your employer PAYE reference on tax forms, you'll be given an Employer Reference Number when you first register as an employer with HM Revenue and Customs. Your Employer Reference Number will consist of a 3 digit HMRC tax reference number and a reference number that's unique to your business.
You'll find your 10 digit number - for example 0123456789 - on correspondence from HMRC, often on the top right of letters issued regarding your UK tax.

Your previously filed return should be notated with your EIN. Ask the IRS to search for your EIN by calling the Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933. The hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday.
