Channel 5's Irish crime drama Blood returns tonight for a second season of deception and mistrust. The first season of the psychological drama followed a woman named Cat Hogan (Carolina Main) returning to her hometown following the death of her mother Mary (Ingrid Cragie), who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease.
What happened in the first series of Blood? The first season centred on Cat (played by Carolina Main), who ventures back to her childhood home in Ireland after her mother, Mary, is pronounced dead. She suffered injuries resulting from a fall and everybody is satisfied that it was an accident, apart from Cat, that is.
Jim finally tells Cat the truth. The truth is finally revealed in a series of flashbacks to the days leading up to Mary's death. The episode flashes back to the days before Mary's death, Jim looks after Mary with kindness and tenderness - showing an apparent different side to his character.
Now we know that Jim did kill his wife, but with her say-so, it finds a new mystery in his return home after a long absence. Although he isn't in prison, neither is he in possession of his medical licence, and he finds himself grafting for food and board on the farm where Fiona's husband, Paul, works.
Ian takes the role of Paul, the husband of Fiona Hogan (played by Grainne Keenan), who starts season two afflicted with the awful condition known as Motor Neuron Disease. He's really struggling and she's got Motor Neuron Disease and she's slowly fading.
The second season departs from the book and is fully fictional, with Coates saying, "There are no more rules.
