The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is undoubtedly an excellent JRPG with strategically engaging combat, tons of side-missions, exploration and interesting character arcs to sink your teeth into, but it's also a game that's not exactly welcoming to newcomers.

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel Anime Is Coming in 2022. Funimation recently announced it will co-produce a television anime adaptation of the popular JRPG franchise The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel in a global collaboration with UserJoy, SYOU and NADA, set for release in 2022.
The short answer to this is yes and no. Trails of Cold Steel was designed similarly to the Ys games, where the protagonist's love interests are up to the player. As such, you're free to choose a completely different romance interest in Cold Steel II.
Cold Steel 3's romance options are limited to just Alisa, Laura, and Emma, and there's an option during their Final Bond Events to choose a romantic response or to keep everything friendly.
The Trails of Cold Steel story arc consists of four
games set
in the Erebonian empire and follows Rean Schwarzer and Class VII, a specialized group of students at a military academy.
The series also has a few spinoffs.

That isn't to say that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is too difficult of a game on its own (unless you're on a higher difficulty) but it speaks more to the fact that this game is a perfect game for an RPG enthusiast.
It should last 40-60 hours for most people just playing the game, doing some side-quests but it may take 80 hours for a platinum. If you skip through most content, 25-30 hours should be enough. Playing: If you've heard of a strange game from Japan, I've probably played it.
Even though it's the fifth game, Falcom built it to be a good starting point for folks new to the series. It's got relationship building mechanics (similar to Persona and Fire Emblem) and a lot of modern game design conveniences that the Trails in the Sky games do not.
