Seafood includes fish (like tuna or cod) and shellfish (like lobster or clams). Even though they both fall into the category of "seafood," fish and shellfish are biologically different. crustaceans, like shrimp, crab, or lobster. mollusks, like clams, mussels, oysters, scallops, octopus, or squid.
According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, abstinence laws say meat is considered something that comes only from animals that live on land, like chicken, cows, sheep or pigs. Fish are considered a different category of animal.
Common lore states that we should only be eating shellfish, especially oysters, in months with the letter “R.” So we can help ourselves to all the oysters, mussels, and clams we can eat from September through April, but put the brakes on come May.

Shrimp may have a variety of health benefits. It is high in several vitamins and minerals, and is a rich source of protein. Eating shrimp may also promote heart and brain health due to its content of omega-3 fatty acids and the antioxidant astaxanthin ( 6 , 11 , 12 , 13 ).
Seafood generally applies to crustaceans, fish, cephalopods, and ocean mammals; basically sea animals. Seaweed would be considered food from the sea, but not necessarily seafood. Seaweeds are plants and algae, so not animals.
Scientists group fish into three main types. They are divided into these groups because of the structure of their mouths and the types of skeletons they have. There are jawless fishes, cartilaginous (cart uhl AJ uh nuhs) fishes, and bony fishes.
