Most players will remove their jerseys and shoulder pads between periods to allow themselves to be more comfortable for a while. Some players even remove their skates as well.

The Simple Answer. A good rule of thumb for active hockey players is to get their skates sharpened after 15–20 hours on the ice. If you're really pushing hard on your edges, you may want to sharpen them a little more often.

True Hockey has a stable of so-called “True Pros,” including the likes of Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ryan Johansen of the Nashville Predators and Mathieu Perreault of the Jets. They use some, if not all, of True's hockey gear and are featured on True's website.
We sharpen every player's skates before every game. Some guys, like Sidney Crosby -- who I worked with at the Olympics in Sochi this year -- get their skates sharpened between every period, whether they need it done or not. It's amazing how sensitive hockey players are about their skates. They can feel every bad edge.
According to the manufacturer, they have a stiffness level of 75 (on a scale of 10 to 100) and it took me about 3 weeks to break them in, skating for one hour about 4 to 5 times a week on average. However, I do have to say that it took me about 6 months to be able to skate for longer that one hour in them.
Average priced skates ($150-$400) are made for recreational hockey. Some will not hold up so well, and others will hold up fine, it depends on the brand and model. An average priced skate should be fine for most players. High end skates ($400-$800) are made for competitive hockey and skilled skaters.
Different Skates for Different Skaters
Additionally, hockey skate boots are usually much more comfortable than figure skate boots. The toe picks on figure skate boots make it possible to jump and spin. On the other hand, the short light blade on hockey skates helps players with speed and quick stops.The Bauer Vapor skate is a low-volume skate, meaning it fits a narrower foot. We recommend trying on the Bauer Nexus if your foot runs wide, or the Bauer Vapor if your foot is narrow, but either way, try the Bauer Supreme for comparison to see which hockey skate will fit your foot better.
To do the full hockey stop, skate forwards, lift your strong leg, rotate your hips a bit, lean back, and turn your body to the side so that both skates are now sideways (compared to how they were pointing before). Plant your back foot and dig in until you stop. Congratulations, you have just learned how to hockey stop.
A proper fit for hockey skates should fit 1-1.5 sizes smaller than your street shoes. Your toes should barely touch the toe cap, while having no more than 1/4 inch of space in the heel. When you're finished lacing up your skates, they should feel snug with the foot resting flat on the footbed.
They are worth it if you have problems getting skates that fit your feet. I went through both pro line Bauer Nexus & CCM Super Tacks skates and was not able to find any skates that fit my feet (high volume, high instep). So ultimately I ordered True Skates. There is no foot pain and essentially no break in time.
A better fit can make a lot of difference as you won't lose energy through the space in the boot. But more expensive skates are generally stiffer and that can also help prevent energy transfer. Technique is more important for getting faster than your skates are though.
I (usually) recommend that players lace their skates snugly through the middle part of the foot (the part of the foot that needs the most support), but that above the ankle (the top eyelet of the boot) they should keep them somewhat looser. For the same reason I do not recommend taping the ankles.
Let's start with the basics. Currently, Bauer and CCM are the two biggest manufacturers in hockey skates. They each offer three lines of skates with three entirely different fits - one for narrower feet, one for regular feet, and one for wider feet. For CCM, they should look at Tacks skates.

EASTON IS BACK! Easton is, was, and probably always will be my favorite! As most of you now know Easton was bought out and they are no longer making sticks (except for select NHL players). The news hit many of us hard, resulting in shouts of anger, uncontrollable sobbing, and lost hockey souls.
CCM & Reebok skates generally fit 1.5 sizes down from your shoe size. For example, if wearing a US 8.0, you would generally wear a 6.5 CCM or Reebok skate. It's not uncommon for NHL players to use a new stick every game and their teams pay for them — an average of about $200 per stick, which is about $100 less than they cost in a sports store. The regular season is 82 games — not including practices — so the stick bill for NHL teams can get very expensive.
At the advanced skating levels, higher quality boots and blades are required. A suitable pair of skates for a test-only skater costs $500 to $1,000. Skate sharpening prices range from $15 to $25. Skates should be sharpened about every five weeks.
Signs That It's Time for New Skates
If your skates don't support your foot and ankle, it's time for a new pair. Also, check the steel blades on your hockey skates. If they're pitted, rusted, or worn, they might need sharpening—or replacing.It is important to note that baking is NOT a necessary process. In fact, some players prefer the traditional way of breaking in skates which is to simply wear them. Additionally, recreational skates do not carry enough stiffness to need 'breaking in', and baking can wear materials down to provide less support.

One way to speed up this process is to have your skates baked. This process involves heating up your skates briefly so that they are soft. You then put your skates on and leave them to harden again so they form more to your foot. This should only be done by a professional store/rink with an official skate bake oven.
