Division I schools also are the largest on average. Division II still offers scholarships, but they are rarer and smaller, and Division II schools typically have fewer athletic department funds and fewer sports teams than Division I schools.

With Division 1 being the toughest just like in College sports. However in states like Texas and California and others, Division 5 is the strongest and Division 1 is the smallest/weakest… There are No national champions in team sports in high school in the USA, merely state champions.
All football divisions are based on male enrollment. For instance, my high school was a Division 2 football school, but division 1 in all other sports. Each division is broken down into regions. And that's where the playoff bracket is seeded.
DI universities are where the best high school and prep athletes from around the world go to play and compete. Many athletes and families feel that D1 programs are run too much like a business and choose to play at a division level where expectations on academics and athletics are more balanced.
Every division has something different to offer. D3 and NAIA programs tend to be smaller schools, while D1 colleges often enroll the most students. And D2 may provide you with the opportunity of playing all four years, while at a D1 program, you may be benched for the first three.
To recap, D1 is a LOT better than D2 and D3. But D2 and D3 are essentially the same. The difference between the two typically comes in the form of education and athletic scholarships. D2 is able to offer its' athletes financial aid in the form of scholarships, and D3 does it in the form of academic scholarships.
4A is made up of the largest schools, and 1A the smallest. Prior to 1993, a set minimum enrollment number delineated each school's classification. The classifications are reordered every four years based on updated student population numbers.
Amateur Athletic Association
Triple-A or Class AAA is the highest level of play in Minor League Baseball in the United States and Mexico. Before 2008, Triple-A leagues also fielded teams in Canada.
While the minor league system in baseball is generally hierarchical — Low A is better than rookie ball, High A is better than Low A, AA is better than High A — that hierarchy splits at AA / AAA rather than continuing in sequence. Starting with rookie ball, players are generally matched up by age and ability.
The AAA tier was introduced 26 years ago and the B.C. High School Boys Basketball Association (B.C. Boys) said in an information package sent to coaches and administrators that it intended to "create a fairer tiering system than we currently use."
A = top tier, AA = lower tier. One noticeable difference from all three divisions: -D1 (FBS and FCS) can offer full ride scholarships. -DII can only offer partial scholarships. -DIII cannot offer scholarships.

The new Class 7A begins with Hoover and its grades 10-12 enrollment of 1,978 students for classification purposes.
No Class 7A addition will occur before at least 2022. Future change will impact many local programs. Seven of the eight largest high schools in the state entering the current 2018-20 alignment are from the Dallas area.
