Measure the pencil with yarn wraps against a ruler or a measuring tape to make sure your wraps are within an inch. Count the wraps within the inch, and compare against these measurements below: Lace or 2 ply: 35 or more. Light fingering, sock, or 2 ply: 22 – 34.
3 ply yarn is one of the most enjoyable weights to knit with as it's fine and lightweight. It's also known as fingering yarn because it's so easy to use. This weight is immensely popular for crafting socks, delicate gloves and baby garments. Typically a thinner needle is recommended for finer yarns.

This means a strand of yarn made up of 4 plys now. could vary between being a very fine cobweb weight to extra bulky. 4 Ply is now used as a description of the thickness of the yarn regardless of its structure.
Avoid using singles yarn to make projects that will get a lot of friction, like socks, as they felt quicker as well. But for super-soft and warm hats, cowls, mittens, and sweaters? Single-ply yarn is an ideal candidate.
If you use DK for a 4 ply pattern it will come out bigger so, if the pattern tells you to knit for, say, 4" or 10cms you will have to make it a bit longer to be in proportion. The easiest thing would be to try to find a pattern in DK or to buy some inexpensive 4ply yarn and use your DK yarn for something else.
A 4 ply is the same as fingering or baby weight and doubling it should get the same gauge as DK on the same needles. Other wise you'll have to use much smaller needles and if you follow the pattern numbers, will get a smaller item.

A three ply yarn is round and will thus show off patterns and such in knitting. A 4-ply is rounder. Provided the weight and gauge is correct you should be fine, because the size of the yarn would be the same.
You can double strand DK yarn and it should knit up to a chunky/bulky gauge. Though by the gauge, that chunky yarn sounds more like a worsted weight, aran weight at best.

What is chunky weight yarn? Bulky (US) is known as chunky (UK) and 12 ply weight (AU/NZ).
10 ply. This is also a quick yarn to knit with and is ideal for the following; sweaters, cardigans. 3.75mm-4.5mm. 5.5mm-6.5mm. Chunky.
A ply is a strand of fiber that makes up a piece of yarn. These are called singles or single ply yarns. Single ply yarn adds a distinct aesthetic to knit and crocheted items crafted from it. You might notice a softer overall feel with less distinct stitch definition. Most single ply yarn will have a halo around it.
6 ply sock yarns are more of a double knit (DK) weight than your typical sock yarns which tend to be like a 4 ply. 6 ply sock yarns knit up faster and give a bulkier, warmer sock.
Knowing how to choose a substitute yarn is very important when it comes to knitting and crochet projects. Double knitting (DK) yarn is 22 stitches and 28 rows, to 10 x 10 cm, over stocking stitch, using 4mm needles. Aran yarn is 18 stitches and 24 rows, to 10 x 10 cm, over stocking stitch, using 5mm needles.
Aran or DK should be fine for that, just use bigger needles if you are using an aran. It will be thicker and bigger all round, and heavier. You will need more yards I think, too. But - you may well get better stitch definition with most DK weight wools.
2 strands worsted weight = 1 strand chunky. 2 strands chunky = 1 strand super chunky.
