Usually, though, the most affordable harp for a beginner will be one of the smaller folk harps, in the 22-29 string range. Harps are not inexpensive instruments, so beware of cheap low-quality harps.

The lyre (Greek: λύρα, lýra) is a string instrument known for its use in Greek classical antiquity and later periods. The lyre is similar in appearance to a small harp but with distinct differences. The fingers of the free hand silenced the unwanted strings in the chord.
Is the Harp Hard to Play? Yes and no. Unlike wind and bowed string instruments, the harp sounds great from day one and it is relatively easy to play simple and satisfying pieces after only a few lessons. However, the harp is a difficult instrument to play to a high standard.
The harp is a stringed musical instrument that has a number of individual strings running at an angle to its soundboard; the strings are plucked with the fingers.
There are two main types of harp: pedal harps and lever harps. Pedal harps are usually known as concert or orchestral harps and lever harps are usually referred to as Clarsach or Celtic Harps. Not only do these harps all vary in size, shape and sound but also can be electric or electro accoustic.
You can think of the strings on the harp as the white keys on the piano. Levers do the same thing as pedals, but instead of having one pedal per note, you have one lever for each individual string. If you want C sharp, and you have 4 C strings, you have to flip up to 4 levers.
Chromaharp. The autoharp was invented in 1881 by Charles F. Zimmerman, and is the only native American instrument. It was one of the most popular instruments in the nation around the turn of the century, but lost some of its favor in the 1930's and 40's.

The most common number of strings for lever or Celtic harps is 34. This will allow you to play a wide range of music and is also the accepted number of strings for most exam boards. A 34-string harp can take you all the way from beginner to advanced. Harps with 36 strings are also fairly common.
Product description. Just slide a songsheet under the strings and pluck the string above each note — it's that easy! Anyone, regardless of prior experience, can instantly play beautiful music with this lap harp (also known as a zither or a folk harp). An excellent way to introduce children to the joys of music.
Lap harps have about 15-26 strings. Pedal harps can have from 40 to 47 strings. 40 strings are fine for some purposes, but in an orchestra you will probably want 46 or 47 strings.
Zither, any stringed musical instrument whose strings are the same length as its soundboard. The European zither consists of a flat, shallow sound box across which some 30 or 40 gut or metal strings are stretched.
The price of used harps is closer to the actual cost of making them because there is a higher demand for the number available. Even then, most used harps go for less than it would cost to make them. Harps are largely hand made out of good materials.

The new Salvi anniversary harp, with inlaid mother of pearl, is $95,000, making it their most expensive harp at the moment (at least as far as I can tell). But I think it might cost even more than that. Lyon and Healy's current most expensive is the Louis XV Special at $179,000.
A pedal harp typically has a range of six and a half octaves (46 or 47 strings), weighs about 36 kg (80 lb), is about 1.8 m (6 ft) high, has a depth of 1.2 m (4 ft), and is 55 cm (21 1⁄2 in) wide at the bass end of the soundboard.
To make a xylophone, start by choosing a dense, hard wood for the keys. Next, cut the wood into strips with arcs on the bottom side and mark where you'll attach the keys to the xylophone box. To make the box, form a trapezoid with your wood and glue it together.
Then, sit in a chair, put the harp between your legs so the shortest strings are closest to your body, and tilt the harp so it's leaning against your right shoulder. Finally, put 1 hand on each side of the strings, and use the tips of your thumbs and your first 3 fingers to gently pluck the strings.
