Pandora is a figure from Greek mythology who was not only the first woman, but --as an instrument of the wrath of Zeus-- was held responsible for releasing the ills of humanity into the world.
A "Pandora's box" is a metaphor in our modern languages, and the proverbial phrase refers to a source of endless complications or trouble arising from a single, simple miscalculation.
One mentioned by Bulfinch is, that the box was initially filled with blessings for humanity, but when Pandora opened the box, most of them escaped, but she managed to close it in time for hope to stay inside.
The gods gave her many traits including beauty, curiosity, charm, and cleverness. Hence her name “Pandora,” meaning “all gifted” or, alternately, “a gift to all.”
How did Pandora (Greek mythology) die? So it stands to reason then when she brought mortality to humanity, she became mortal herslef and probably died of natural causes later.
When Pandora opened the box, all evil escaped it, but Pandora (under Zeus' will) held hope inside the jar by closing the lid. Thus it is not possible to escape the mind of Zeus.
Mystery surrounds the death of a man whose heart stopped after he opened “Pandora's Box”. Jason Airey, 37, was found unconscious by his parents in his bedroom at their home in Carlisle, Cumbria in May. Next to him was a box bearing the phrase “Pandora's Box” in red letters.
The equation of the two also occurs in the 1550 allegorical painting by Jean Cousin the Elder, Eva Prima Pandora (Eve the first Pandora), in which a naked woman reclines in a grotto. Her right elbow rests on a skull, indicating the bringing of death, and she holds an apple branch in that hand – both attributes of Eve.
Pandora's status is very different from that of Eve in the Biblical stories. In the first Genesis version, women were just part of the original creation: in the second Genesis version, the Lord God produced woman to solve the problem of man being alone. But Pandora is a punishment. She is a pawn in a male competition.
