On 2nd October 2014, Swachh Bharat Mission was launched throughout length and breadth of the country as a national movement. The campaign aims to achieve the vision of a 'Clean India' by 2nd October 2019. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is the most significant cleanliness campaign by the Government of India.
Current service tax rate is 12%. On it, 2% education cess and 1% higher education cess are added. So the effective service tax rate is 12.36% (12% + 3%).
The logo for the Swachh Bharat Mission, that is being released today, signifies the vision of Mahatma Gandhi who wanted to see a Swachh Bharat. The logo contains the spectacles of Mahatma Gandhi with the bridge of the spectacles in the National Tricolour.
Service Tax was earlier levied on a specified list of services, but in the 2012 budget, its scope was increased. It is charged to the individual service providers on cash basis, and to companies on accrual basis. This tax is payable only when the value of services provided in a financial year is more than Rs 10 lakh.
New Delhi: Finance minister Arun Jaitley may hike service tax rate to 16-18% from the current 15% in the budget, due on Wednesday, as a precursor to the goods and services tax (GST) rollout.
Therefore, Swachh Bharat Cess paid on input services has to be available as Cenvat Credit and the same can be discharged by utilising Cenvat Credit and assessee was therefore entitled for the refund of it.
Back in 2016, finance minister, Mr. Jaitley had introduced a cess, called the Krishi Kalyan Cess (KKC), at 0.5% on all taxable services during the 2016 Union Budget. 1st June, 2016 is the effective date of Krishi Kalyan Cess.
1. What is Cess? Cess is a form of tax and an additional levy by the Central Government to raise funds for specific purpose. Cess is resorted to only when there is a need to meet specific expenditure for the Public welfare and to be discontinued once the objective is met.
But what has caused concern among the three states is that while taxes collected and transferred to the Consolidated Fund of India are shared with the states in a ratio recommended by the 15th Finance Commission, proceeds collected from cesses are not shared with the states.
Who introduced GST in India? Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched GST into operation on the midnight of 1 July 2017. But GST was almost two decades in the making since the concept was first proposed under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
According to Union government approved guidelines in 2017, service charge on hotel and restaurant bills are voluntary and not mandatory. When he received his bill, he noticed he had been charged a 10% service charge, in addition to the goods and service tax (GST).
Person liable to pay service tax The tax is normally payable by the service provider. However law empowers the Government to notify a person other than the service provider to pay the service tax.. In some of the cases liability of payment of service tax has been shifted to the service provider.
Service tax was levied on “provision of services” while GST will be levied on supply of services. Krishna: Arjuna, in Service tax the rate is 15%, while in GST the rate of tax on services might be 12% or 18%. The rate of tax on Services will be defined according to the Service Accounting Code.
PENALTY FOR FAILURE TO PAY SERVICE TAX:Section 76 of the Finance Act, 1994 deals with the case of penalty for failure to pay or delay in the payment of service tax. The penalty contemplated is Rs. 100/- per day of default or interest of 1% per month computed on daily basis, whichever is higher.

Service Tax Exemption10 lakh over the course of the previous financial year, you can claim exemption from service tax. In case the aggregate value of taxable services provided over the course of the previous financial year is more than Rs. 10 lakh, service tax exemption cannot be availed.
GST is applicable on all goods and services, including the service of the labour contract.
Differences between service tax and service charge: 1) The service tax is a government levied tax and is fixed in every state of India, at 14 percent. On the other hand, service charge is an extra cost charged by the restaurant, which varies. On the other hand, the service charge goes directly to the restaurant.
