A postal code (also known as postcode, post code, PIN, or ZIP Code) is a series of letters or digits or both, sometimes including spaces or punctuation, included in a postal address for the purpose of sorting mail.
Eircode, Ireland's postcode system launched in July 2015. Unlike other countries where postcodes define a cluster or group of addresses, a unique Eircode is assigned to each residential and business address. Having an Eircode, removes the hassle and mistakes out of finding addresses in Ireland.
The sender's address (your address), is on the top right hand corner. The address of the company/person to whom the letter is being sent is written on the left-hand side. When you do not know the name of the person to whom you are writing, you may start with 'Dear Sir/Madam'.
There is no official address for any location in Ireland. People living in the same street or townland or even the same house may write their addresses very differently.
Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland, which is NOT in the United Kingdom.
In Ireland, 35% of Irish premises (over 600,000) have non-unique addresses due to an absence of house numbers or names. Ireland was the last country in the OECD to create a postcode system, which is called Eircode.
“It is much more than just a postcode. It is a smart location code for all Irish addresses.” Each code will consist of seven digits – a three-digit 'routing key', and 4-digit 'unique identified. The unique identifier is for an individual address.

Autoaddress has launched a free Eircode app available now for Apple and Android devices. Completely free to use, this app is a solution for delivery drivers, sales people, service engineers and the general public to accurately locate properties and get directions using Eircode.
Simply enter the seven character Eircode and Google will display their version of the address (usually not the way you would write it yourself!) and a distance, so just tap on this address. The address will be displayed on the map, and you can tap on the directions button to get Sat-Nav directions.
If you can't find your Eircode at all in Google Maps or other navigation apps it is ?likely they have not updated their address data with the most recent Eircode information. This issue does not affect the National Ambulance Service as they update their address database Quarterly when new Eircodes are released.
