When Company was first staged in 1970 it broke new ground. It was billed as a "concept musical," abandoning traditional narrative and verse-verse-chorus structures in favour of a looser, more fluid logic. Some of the cast from Stephen Sondheim's musical, Company.
Stephen Sondheim's seminal musical Company opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre April 26, 1970. In a series of vignettes, Company tells the story of New York bachelor Bobby who learns about the perils and pleasures of love, marriage, dating and divorce from his married friends.
The official opening night is now Thursday, Dec.9 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, a full month earlier than the previously announced opening. Producers today also confirmed the return of nearly the entire cast from the show's shutdown-interrupted run in March 2020.

A company is a legal entity formed by a group of individuals to engage in and operate a business—commercial or industrial—enterprise. They can also be distinguished between private and public companies. Both have different ownership structures, regulations, and financial reporting requirements.

The majority of Broadway theatres are owned or managed by three organizations: the Shubert Organization, a for-profit arm of the non-profit Shubert Foundation, which owns seventeen theatres; the Nederlander Organization, which controls nine theatres; and Jujamcyn, which owns five Broadway houses.
The Bobby who existed in 1970 is a different sort of 35-year-old than the one in 2013, just as the definition of marriage has evolved in the 43 years since “Company†opened.
Bennett came to New York City where, beginning in 1961, he danced in the choruses of ''Subways Are for Sleeping,'' ''Here's Love'' and ''Bajour. '' In 1967 and 1968 he assisted, without attribution, in choreographing ''How Now, Dow Jones'' on Broadway and ''Your Own Thing'' and ''By Jupiter'' Off Broadway.

Company, Sondheim's sixth Broadway musical, was his breakthrough to serious credibility. It received 14 Tony Award nominations, a record at the time. “Company†is the opposite of solitude and loneliness. It means being surrounded by friends and loved ones.
With Stephen Sondheim's blessing, director Marianne Elliott has given the marital musical an incisive gender-flip. Bobby has become Bobbie; bachelor become bachelorette. It brings a 50-year-old show — and its sexual politics — bang up to date.

I realized during this, my third visit to Phantom, that this show is as much a concept musical as any of director Harold Prince's more respected collaborations with Stephen Sondheim: it's an opera about the world of opera, a world of grand illusions that terrorize and then destroy its gloriously mad hero.

Mamma Mia!, with a book by Catherine Johnson and music and lyrics from Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, is a musical based around the music from the band, ABBA, of which, Andersson and Ulvaeus were both members. The musical came to fruition under the idea of theatre producer, Judy Craymer.
Evita is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics and book by Tim Rice. It concentrates on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. The musical began as a rock opera concept album released in 1976.
By the 1940's, it was this type of plot-based “integrated†show that embodied the image of the modern musical. Then in 1947, Rodgers and Hammerstein again created a landmark show in the form of Allegro, which is often credited as the first “concept musical.â€
A rock musical is a musical theatre work with rock music. The genre of rock musical may overlap somewhat with album musicals, concept albums and song cycles, as they sometimes tell a story through the rock music, and some album musicals and concept albums become rock musicals.
